no GUI after screen lock

Hi All

2 weeks ago I done the weekly upgrades. I have a annoying problem in that when the screen locks automatically or I do it manually, after I type in the password, the GUI will appear. The mouse and the GNOME top menu appears but the GUI will not appear. I have to reboot the computer to get back into the GUI.

How would I go about trying to find out what is causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

You can still log on tty (e.g Ctrl+Alt+F3) and sign in there. This way, you're able to use the command line to report in real time (i.e. without rebooting).

So run

Code: Select all

ls /var/log/* | grep dm
to list all files under /var/log/ which contains "dm". This way I have kdm.log (since I don't use gdm). Next step

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/gdm.log|pastebunz
resp.

Code: Select all

tail -n 10 /var/log/gdm.log|pastebunz
(to see the last 10 lines) and add the link here.

probably offtopic but,
try see if it does the same with xlock and xfce.

I find xfce qt apps (qt4?) tooltips and menus open on the other monitor and also if you lock the screen the 2nd monitor is still shown but that's considered a feature... I just need to find how to disable that feature...
