Nvidia (Go) 7700 - works with Sabayon? - Solved!

Postby Pjotrek » Sat Dec 09, 2006 14:29

I am about to buy a new laptop. The one I am now looking at (Asus A8JS) uses Nvidia Go 7700. Looking in Nvidia supported hardware list, all 7700's are missing:
    ...
    GeForce 7600 GS 0x0392
    GeForce 7600 GT 0x0391
    GeForce 7800 GS 0x0093
    GeForce 7800 GS 0x00F5
    GeForce 7800 GT 0x0092
    ...
    GeForce Go 7400 0x01D8
    GeForce Go 7600 0x0398
    GeForce Go 7800 0x0098
    GeForce Go 7800 GTX 0x0099
    ...
But, on the other hand, starting X with verbose=5, gives the following in the log:
    ...
GeForce 7600 GS, GeForce 7300 GT, GeForce 7600 LE, GeForce 7300 GT,
GeForce Go 7700, GeForce Go 7600, GeForce Go 7600 GT,
Quadro NVS 300M, GeForce Go 7900 SE, Quadro FX 550M, Quadro FX 560,
    ...

...which all makes me confused. Does Nvidia Go 7700 have Linux drivers or does it not?

All I can say is that should be supported without any particular problem.

It will work. Obviously 7700 is just a spiffed up 7600.
Found the final evidence here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81022

I'll go one step further and say it does work fine (got my A8Js a week ago) using 1.0-9629. Only downside is that there is no powermizer under linux (unless I'm missing something) and you can't underclock it via coolbits to save power.

:P
Got my new Asus laptop A8Js today - booted right off the 3.2 dvd without need for any tweaks. No sound yet, though, but I am confident I will be able to fix that.

Remember to update your nvidia drivers to get rid of those small problems.
My 6800XT used to be named as a 6600, but with a little emerge nvidia-drivers. That problems was fixed.
