Has anybody installed Sabayon on a Sony Vaio laptop?

Postby Pjotrek » Fri Dec 08, 2006 0:04

I am thinking about getting a Vaio FE31Z. (Core2duo 1.86GHz, 2GB/200GB, Nvidia Go7600/128MB)
Has anybody experiences of installing Sabayon on that or a similar unit?
Should I install a 32 or 64-bit version?
Any specific tips/problems?

For GF7600 Go, be sure to add "opengl=nvidia" to your boot parameters (by pressing F5 at the boot prompt). No need to do that after install.

Sound

If sound is of concern to you, you may need to look into how well ALSA supports the onboard soundcard (particularly if it is HDA, as I see in the specs it is).

[I run the 32 bit version on my Core 2 Duo.]

Seems everyone is out of stock of that Vaio I wanted.
What do you think about Asus A8JS (Core2duo 2GHZ, 4MB L2 cache, 2/120GB, nvidia go7700/512MB)?

I cannot find Nvidia Go 7700 in the Nvidia Linux Compatibility list, seems like 7700 & 7500 are totally left out? How could that be? Did they just miss them, or do they really not work with Linux?
On the other hand, in the Gentoo forum, when starting X in verbose mode, there seems to be Go 7700 support? (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-507309-highlight-nvidia+7700.html)
Has anyone tried? Success? Failure?

:P
Got my new Asus laptop A8Js today - booted right off the 3.2 dvd without need for any tweaks. No sound yet, though, but I am confident I will be able to fix that.

I can't believe they have a video card that powerful for a laptop. Oh well. Glad it works.
