Screen Saver Control [Solved]

Postby dhinds » Sun Sep 11, 2011 20:51

Having just installed Sabayon v. 6 Gnome 64bit I'm surprised to not find the screen saver anywhere. I also see only Applications and Places (and nothing else except the date and my name on SL's Menu Bar - no Systems Category or a way to minimize all the windows and see the desktop). Did I lose something? TIA

Screen Savers Location

Postby dhinds » Mon Sep 12, 2011 5:04

On a freshly installed SL v.6 G 64 bit I don't see where the Screen Savers are located. My Menu Bar shows Applications and Places - nothing more (except my name and the usual icons), but no System or Preferences.

Entropy shows that the Gnome Screensavers are installed but I see no way to select or preview. Where are they?

I also see no way to minimize the open windows (see the destop). It was there after installing Sabayon, but not now.

TIA

Try a 'locate screen' or 'locate screensaver' and post reply

bash: locate: command not found

Is what I get in both cases.

LoL, you don't have "locate" installed. Hmm, try 'equo install mlocate' and after try again the last 2 commands. It's a sort of file finder, you'll understand after you install & try it

"No such file or directory"

Not surprising, since if I lock the screen it turns black. Yet the gnome-screensaver 3.0.0-r1 is installed.

Gnome3 does not allow the screensaver configuration "by design", this means that gnome-screensaver will only blank your screen. There are plans to remove entirely gnome-screensaver in the next releases (probably in Gnome3.2). Its functionality will be split in gnome-shell and gnome-session, the screensavers would be built using gnome-shell plugins, as far as I understood.

Seems that this is the case :-? But still, @dhinds, try to look into entropy for installed gnome screensaver and watch what file does he uses and has. If something'z fishy there, try to compile it yourself with emerge or manually. No matter the way, you must have some files running over there, and reply over here :D

no screensavers.

USE flags:
Code: Select all
equery uses gnome-screensaver-3.0.0-r1
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for gnome-extra/gnome-screensaver-3.0.0-r1:
 U I
 - - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If
you want to get meaningful backtraces see
             http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml
 - - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If

             http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml
 - - doc   : Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc)
+ - pam   : Adds support for PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) -
             DANGEROUS to arbitrarily flip

no USE flags to enable them.

Unfortunately, on Gnome3, there is no way to enable screensavers... I found the new Gnome3 policy searching for tutorials, since I wanted to enable some screensavers on my system.
The only way around this that I can see is replacing gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver, but you will lose the integration with the Desktop Environment.

It's clear now, Gnome3's People's Party won the election over there, they're banning every freedoms like screensavers, freedom of editing your own personal gnome desktop and session, less system settings around the whole session. We are living dark times, fellow freedom fighters, Xfce and KDE are our last options over here ...

You can call this topic solved, Micia, may Linus bless us all !
(This was part of my ironical criticism of Gnome3 for the ones who didn't get it yet)
