Runlevel/Bootlevel

Post by Root-Minuz » Mon Aug 29, 2011 3:18

The safest way that i have ever found to do updates is in a console without X running,,,,
is there a way to drop from a Gui to a complete shutdown of X and to a console?

Thanks!

First I log-out of the DE, which then displays the log-in screen.

Then I do Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2, or F3 up to F6) to get to a VT.

Then I login as root user and enter the command:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/xdm stop
When I've finished my console stuff, to get X running again I do:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/xdm restart
And finally I do Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go to the new log-in screen, and log-in to the DE.
