Realtek Wireless card ?

Postby JTAL604622 » Fri Nov 24, 2006 4:44

Ok so my broadcom doesnt seem to want to work even followed the tutorial...

My wireless card (pcmia?) works fine in Ubuntu, slide it in and bang it works. SL it lightsup 1 of 2 leds cannot get the 2nd light to turn on, Knetwork shows it but I cannot activate it to make it work. Am I wrong in assuming that if Debian can do it, then most linux and esp. Gentoo should have the drivers installed to make it work out of the box?

So confused...

yeah, we need dmesg output regarding this card. according to
http://rtl8180-sa2400.sourceforge.net/
there are several cards that carry that chipset and some even have different radios.
basically, we need more information.

ok, so i got my realtek card under knetwork manager and so far so good. When I click to activate it through the manager it starts to go to 28% then hangs and nothing happens. How can I get it to activate another way and stay on?

I have learned alot about wireless cards and laptops the past few days, but after standing in line at bestbuy for this morning im to tired to think...lol.

Console

Postby mdmarmer » Fri Nov 24, 2006 23:13

Only some networks configure easily with KNetworkManager

root konsole

type

iwconfig

(to find out where wireless is -- probably on ra0)

iwconfig ra0 essid YOURESSID channel yourchannel#
dhclient ra0

man iwconfig
if you need more parameters or encryption (WEP)
wpasupplicant for wpa encryption

Update on Wireless...

I downloaded the E-Live cd featuring E17 and it configured my Broadcom card in my laptop and my other wireless card after my first boot. No config required.. Can the developes look at what they did to make this happen then put it in as a update...

I know I am not the only laptop user here that would give his soul for a solution that id not require me to take so many steps that as a intermediate user (new to Gentoo). There website through Distrowatch mentioned the new update to wireless and BAM it worked....

I wonder if there is a way to do the same through SL?
