No kdm, only xdm! No KDE only X!

Post by dummyhead3 » Fri Oct 16, 2009 4:17

Long story short, I upgraded a fesh install of Sabayon 4 to Sabayon 5 (or hopped branches?) using Entropy. When I rebooted, KDE disappeared and I am now left with only the basic X login screen and twm window manager.

Despite the fact that I have some expirience with linux, I can't figure this out, I tried a few things and baisically nothing worked -_-

HELP :!: :?: :!: :?:

Yes, It's set to kdm!

what your graphics card?
Nvidia, I reinstalled the drivers after the update.
and have you tried /etc/init.d/xdm restart?
Tried,it, still brings up the X login manager.
what does /var.log/kdm.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log show as errors?
kdm.log:

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

do you also run gnome? I only ask as gdm might work if you have it installed. try reinstalling kdm?

What is eselect opengl list showing? is it set to nvidia? Make sure your nvidia version matches your kernel version.

you make sure nothing in equo conf update ?

I had a similar problem when hopping to branch 5. Kdm and Kde weren't available anymore.

To fix it you need to make sure all config files are up to date like wolfden said,

I also needed to (re)install Kde-meta as Kde4.2 (the version that was installed before I made the hop) isn't available in branch 5 and it didn't upgrade it to Kde4.3. So installing Kde-meta installs Kde4.3 and then says there are packages installed that aren't available anymore (Kde4.2) and askes to remove them. I did that and everything was working again. I did lose my KDE configuration, but that's no big deal.

I performed

Code: Select all

equo install kde-meta
But it's still the same

I'll try with gdm asap, but yes, my nvidia is at the correct version and it's eselected in opengl.

Code: Select all

equo conf update
It's up to date.

Later, I changed the DISPLAYMANAGER variable in /etc/conf.d/xdm to kdm form kdm-4.0 and now xdm simply doesn't start.

Ok, it works with gdm, thanks for the tip, I'm pretty impressed with KDE 4.3, really nice default theme at least. 8)

I'll just keep using gdm I guess.

Also, an aesthetic concern: when I boot Sabayon, instead of just showing the nice bootup screen, the services being started are written on top of the splash screen. I' not saying it's in verbose mode, it's silent mode with text on the bootup screen with the black as the background behind the writing.l It's kinda hard to describe. I will try reinstalling kdm again, maybe it will help.

so basically what your setting when booting is the pretty background image and the text is running on top of it?
