hibernation does not work

Postby primof » Mon Oct 12, 2009 21:21

Hibernation does not work on my Sabayon 5.0, just installed. Is there any hope to understand why and how to solve such problem?
I'm only a noob, so please tell me which information I need to give you to obtain your help.
Thank you.

I'm afraid there's a variety of reasons this could go wrong, so we'll have to ask you to provide some logs. But first a few general questions.

- Does suspend to ram work?
- Does hibernation activate (your computer hibernates), and then never wake up?
- Is the hibernation option actively greyed-out or missing?
- Does the hibernation command actually do anything at all when you press it?

The logs that can help us determine which error messages your TuxOnIce gave you when attempting to hibernate can be found in
/var/log/pm-suspend.log
/var/log/pm-hibernate.log

and in dmesg and messages, though we'll only ask for you to post those after we have more information about your issue.

Best of luck in getting hibernate working, and I hope this helps!

Thanks for your kind reply. I try to give the info you ask for.

1 - Does suspend to ram work?
2 - Does hibernation activate (your computer hibernates), and then never wake up?
3 - Is the hibernation option actively greyed-out or missing?
4 - Does the hibernation command actually do anything at all when you press it?

1 - Yes, it does.
2 - Sometimes it hibernates and turn off the pc, but when I turn it on again, my usb keyboard is no more recognized. Sometimes it does not work, that is it turn off the monitor but not the pc (some led remain on), so when I move the mouse the block window appears.
3 - Not sure what you mean, hibernation option is present in the menu, it is not missing.
4 - See point 2. Sometimes it works but at the wake up I am not able to use the usb keyboard. Sometimes it does something (because the hard disk led flashes) but without hibernating the pc.

Edit: I am no more sure that hibernation (sometimes) works. It seems to me that it only shut down the pc. Anyhow, it is so (the pc turned off) only the first time, all subsequent times the pc is not turned off.

The logs that can help us determine which error messages your TuxOnIce gave you when attempting to hibernate can be found in
/var/log/pm-suspend.log
/var/log/pm-hibernate.log

Here is the first log. The second one does not exist in directory /var/log. :(

How many Gb of RAM does your PC have, and how many Gb have you allocated to your swap partition?

Thanks for your reply.

Size of my RAM: 2Gb
Size of my swap partition: 2Gb.

If I need to be more precise, can you suggest me which command to use and report output? I know only "df" to see partition size, nothing about ram.

Code: Select all
$ free -mt

For my laptop for example:

Code: Select all
$ free -mt
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          2004        879       1125          0         52        335
-/+ buffers/cache:        491       1512
Swap:         2612          0       2612
Total:        4616        879       3737

Code: Select all
$ man free

for details of the switches.
