Sabaiyon Linux better than Kubuntu?

Post by thenthenio » Sun Sep 21, 2008 23:25

Seems definitely YES!!!
I have been using SL (without Windoz) for more than 2 years now on my PC at home and I'm very happy with it, apart from some difficulties in upgrading, now probably solved with Entropy).
On business it was time to repace the laptop and I was very worried of Vi$ta.
I work in a small company and I'm one of the shareholders and I' also, among other things, responsible for IT services.
So I took the decision of using Linux instead of Windoz, using VistualBox for non portable and cannot live without applications.
This summer I tested many distributions and I decided for Kubuntu (I like KDE) mainly for the easy way it gets upgraded and for its stong stability.
Last week end I got my brand new laptop HP Compaq Portable Workstation 8510w (GC115EA):
- Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz 4MB L2 cache.
- 2GB RAM (upgraded to 4GB).
- PNY Quadro FX570M craphic board.
- 15,4" 1920x1200 pixels screen.
- 120GB HD (replaced with 250GB) 7200 rpm.
- CD/DVD DL read/write unit.
So a very good portable PC, probably better than my desktop at home.
On Linux I like much than any other thing the Compiz-Fusion desktop, not only beautiful but also very useful. On the Mac I like the docking bar (as anybody). For this I decided to install Compiz-Fusion and Cairo-Dock.
Installation was very easy and fast.
I installed the two eye-candy applications and VirtualBox.
Then I started installing Windoz on it and all the Win-bounded applications on it.
- VirtualBox on Kubuntu was crashing very often on virtual machine shutdown.
- All the times when mounting/unmounting ISO images or real CD/DVDs resulted in immediate virtual machine abort (preventing me any way to install software on my virtual Windoz box).
- More and more annoying was that Compiz accellerated graphics dramatically drop down to 6-8 fps (with CPU close to 100%) simply passing the mouse on Cairo-Dock icons or acivating transparency and moving a window, the slowdown sometimes was temporary, sometimes permanent obliging me to reload window manager).
After the entire weekend passed trying and retrying I resigned.
Back to XP or Vi$ta, no, I took an even harder decision (and risk): to install SL.
I did not know that my laptop processor supported 64 bits, Kubuntu was not x86_64 and I was not even able to find an x86_64 ISO of Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
I started the SL 3.5 x86_64 live DVD and everything was ok: sound card, video card, graphic acceleration, network card, wi-fi connection, touchpad with mid and right click emulation, all the extended keyboard (touch) buttons, my external Creative webcam...
So this weekend I installed SL 3.5 x86_64:
- VirtualBox never crashes.
- Mounting/unmounting ISO images or real CD/DVDs on VirtualBox simply works.
- Graphic acceleration never drops down (Cairo-Dock is sometimes a little bit choppy but perfectly usable).
All my preferences, mails, contacts are now in Firefox/Thunderbird as in my old laptop.
The whole disk of my old laptop is now in a single file on my new laptop disk (thanks to Clonezilla).
All main Win-bounded applications are already running on VirtualBox machines.
My new laptop PC is now ready up and running!

Thank you Sabayon!!!
Mauro

Kubuntu sucks, anything with KDE kinda sucks ! Gnome is the best. I ran Ubuntu for a few years and it is a really great distro. Sabayon with gnome is really nice, clearly.
Alienware laptop
Intel Extreme
twin-Nvidia 9800 pci-express 16x SLI
4 GB ram
Raid0 twin sata2 10000rpm drives
Sabayon x86_64, Ubuntu x86_64, XP_64

I don't like gnome interface.
Anyway I think the problems I had would be there even in Ubuntu and Xubuntu.
I don't think they are due to KDE.

Bye.

Yes, I agree with you. Recently I ditched Ubuntu 6.06 LTS after nearly two years on another of my PCs and installed PCLinuxOS 2007 which works flawlessly, unlike Ubuntu. (And, just to add to the subjective ping pong on KDE/GNOME, I don't care for the GNOME interface either.)

I've found some traces of the existence on the Internet but I was unable to find where to download it!
Do you know where is the download link?

Thanks.
