32bit kernel with PAE?

Postby eto » Tue Aug 05, 2008 12:25

Is there any way to also provide a 32bit PAE (64GB High Memory Support) kernel? This is is pretty usefull for 4gb machines running 32bit as the usual kernel provides only 3gb. And no, 64bit is not an option .. as it makes no sence for me with only 4gb compared to the overhead.
There is not much work with it, as its a simple kernel config flag.

Can you give me any reason why not to build x86 kernel-pae which supports up to 64GB RAM and include it in binary package?

In some rare configurations x86_64 is not acceptable... So why don't include an option in x86 if it is so easy to make it? :)

I agree some configs 64bit would not work. As an example a 32bit processor with more than 4gb ram. However, The reason behind not providing a prebuilt binary of it, IMO would be that there is no possible way to think of everyone's custom needs. If you want a custom kernel compile it yourself. The link provided earlier walks you through it very well. I follow that whenever, I rebuild my kernel. I have to build my AC Adapter as a module instead of built in. I don't expect the Sabayon team to provide me with a custom kernel, I just build it myself.

I agree with that. But building a custom kernel is a headache when deploying on several desktops. My main distro and community in which I involved is openSUSE and binary builds of kernel such as kernel-default, kernel-pae, kernel-xen is just a piece of cake here( yes, sabayon doesn't have such great thing as Build Service, but i don't think that several prebuild kernel images wich would fit the situation of any user is such a great problem).

If you have to do it on multiple machines, what I would recommend (if they are all the same; which I assume as you seem to need the custom kernel on all of them) is that you install sabayon on one machine, then fully update it, then customize the kernel, then make a disk image of the machine ( link to imaging software), then deploy the image to the other machines. this way would end up being the best method least amount of work probably. Plus then, you have a more current backup if something goes wrong with a machine.

You could always create a crepo (community repository)
