Running out of resources?

Post by Stupot » Fri May 25, 2018 20:58

I've been digging at this for a while on my own and thought I'd bring it here in case someone has any ideas of things to look at. Every now and again, when I'm working and have an IDE, my development applications running, my integration programming running, a browser and a couple of other apps up and running, I can manage to run out of resources. But the thing is, I'm not running out of RAM, I'm only using upwards of 16 of the 32 GB I have on my system. Unfortunately, I'm really struggling to find out WHICH resource is "out" or what is limiting it.

I'll see my application print out

Code: Select all

Exception in thread "logback-5" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread
and I can get terminals to spout out

Code: Select all

-bash: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable
Nothing pops out to me in my ulimit that seems like it would be the limiting factor

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
scheduling priority (-e) 0
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
pending signals (-i) 127548
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
open files (-n) 1024
pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8
POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200
real-time priority (-r) 0
stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes (-u) 1500
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
file locks (-x) unlimited

And this was printed out right after a failed fork:

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ cat /proc/meminfo | grep Mem
MemTotal: 32920448 kB
MemFree: 18925776 kB
MemAvailable: 25339264 kB

Then would my terminal (Konsole) also be printing out

Code: Select all

-bash: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable
at the same time? Surely my linux terminal isn't being limited by java settings.

Those aren't the only applications affected, just the ones that I've been able to easily capture output. Chrome plugins will crash/fail to load as well. The problem is bigger than just java.

What are the apps you run? There has to be some nasty one consuming your thread/file descriptors.
Maybe you'll find your answer here: bash: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable - Limit issue?.

The app I program for work makes heavy use of threads, as does running soapui to test it. Put that together with the IDE, Chrome, and Firefox, and there's a good amount of resources going to places. But I know my machine is more than capable. I'll see what I can try out from that link and report back after I've seen how it does under heavy load.
