USB3-Speed slows down - many errors

Post by linuxfluesterer » Wed Apr 26, 2017 14:07

Hallo guys.
Since some time, I experience a (new?) strange problem. When I will watch movies from a USB3-HDD with btrfs (Samsung, 1TB), I get audio/video sync breaks, means the audio is delayed.
I also experience speed problems when copying big files (> 1GByte) onto this special USB3 Hard Disk.
So, here are some specs:
- Tuxedo Pizza Box with Intel i7-7700t with 2.9 GHz, 16 GBytes Ram, Plasma 5.9.4, Kernel 4.8.17, 8 USB3- Connectors as date of 12/03/2017
Disclaimer: I need 4.8.x Kernel due to bugs in Kernel 4.9.x in DVB-S2 kernel/firmware modules - aren't loaded properly.

So, when I do copy a big file to the USB3-HDD, then the copy process seems to start fast, then the rate is going down, from in the beginning around 56 MByte / sec down to 2-3 MByte / sec.

To copy a 1700MByte file, midnight commander shows a copy speed of 45 - 55 MByte / sec then the file is shown in target directory. Would be ok. But the LED of the external hdd is flashing for 440 seconds after mc 'finishes' to copy - more than 7 minutes. And before flash stops, I can not disconnect the hdd device from my computer.
So, I have checked my dmesg:

I have connected the same hdd to another Core i7 laptop with Sabayon Plasma 5.9.4 and Kernel 4.9.23.
Here, I don't have any speed and LED flash problems. Speed is good, normal for USB3.

I also booted my 'problem' computer (a 'pizza box') with the latest Sabayon-KDE iso (Plasma 5.9.4) as date of 24/04/2017. And again, on this computer, now run with Kernel 4.10, has the same problems and errors in dmesg as I have with my system running Plasma 5.4.9 and Kernel 4.8.17.
I haven't found anything usable in Google to that topic. Btw. I have removed the 'Analog Clock' plasmoid, which was recommended. No change.
Any idea? Any suggestion?
Thank you in advance.

Hi LFS

by default BTRFS use compression level (zlib or lzo) to improve HDD performances

you can try to disable the compression and test HDD performances

Code: Select all

# mount -o compress=no,remount /dev/<your-hdd> /mountpoint

Code: Select all

<BTRFS>

compress|compress=type|compress-force|compress-force=type
Control BTRFS file data compression. Type may be specified as "zlib" "lzo" or "no" (for no compression, used for remounting). If
no type is specified, zlib is used. If compress-force is specified, all files will be compressed, whether or not they compress
well. If compression is enabled, nodatacow and nodatasum are disabled.

Thank you (gracie) for your quick reply, Sabayonino.
I could not remount my hdd. So I only mounted my hdd with:

Code: Select all

mount -o compress=no /dev/sdc2 /mnt
Then I started a copy of another big file with 1350 MBytes. Again, midnight commander seems to work very fast, more than 60 MBytes / sec and the file was shown in target directory after a few seconds. Then it seems, that the physical copy was successful because the LED didn't flash anymore, but only for maybe 5 seconds. Sad to say, that then the LED flashes again for about 200 seconds (3min 20 seconds).

I don't think, that compress on or off is the solution due to the circumstance that a copy to the same hdd, connected to my other laptop works like a charm, quick and clean. On this laptop I just only connect this hdd and mount it with a click on the device manager in the taskbar of Plasma.

And... what about all the errors in dmesg, which I don't receive on my laptop, especially this line:

Code: Select all

xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: ERROR Transfer event for disabled endpoint or incorrect stream ring
Then, what about the repetition of the 'tag' lines in dmesg?

Here is an activity view of KSysguard while LED is flashing after mc seems to have finished the copy. The extraordinary performance lasts until the LED stops flashing:
Image

There was a Google hint to create an option file in /etc/modprobe.d with name ignore-uas.conf:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modprobe.d/ignore_uas.conf
options usb-storage quirks=152d:0578:u
So I created it, I rebooted without external hdd into Plasma, then I connected the hdd and mounted it with a click on the device manager in the taskbar. This didn't help either.

Any other idea? Thank you in advance again.

MC has a small buffer size during copy/move process

transferring very large files over fish protocol or external hard drive , MC uses /tmp/mc-<user> directory as buffer before all copy process ends.

regarding your dvb

I'm not sure about this :

Oh, Sabayonino, thank you again.
I instantly installed Kernel 4.10.11, but kernel-switcher list did NOT list the new Kernel to me. So I used

Code: Select all

equo i linux-sabayon-4.10.11
instead.

I'm not sure that the speed really improved, but maybe the slowspeed is according to the combination of my computer (USB brand on ASRock mobo) and the external SATA carriage, in which my SSHD from Samsung is connected. (I put my SSHD into the hhd enclosure).
Then I connected another fixed, external case from WD (Elements), a USB3 1TB mechanical drive to my computer. Here the speed is what I expect, but not with my external adapter from CSL, lsusb value:

Code: Select all

Bus 002 Device 004: ID 152d:0578 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp.
So, what I don't know now, is, what is the troubles reason? The adapter or the Samsung SSHD? As I said, on another laptop, there are no speed deficites.

Off topic: With Kernel 4.10.11 I can use my USB-DVB-S2 receiver, a Technotrend TT-connect S2 4600, now as I could use with Kernel 4.8.17. I was waiting for Kernel 4.10.x, but (as I said before) kernel-switcher list did not show me.

If you have any new idea, you're welcome to tell me. I will keep in mind to solve my USB3 speed problem.

Thank you very much.

Thanks again...
I did the command, scrolled back and found Kernel 4.10.11...

Anyway, the original topic of slow copy problems isn't solved yet. So, I can't close this thread as [Solved] yet. BTW, I haven't found any hint how to increase the buffer size of MC.

But I will try another external USB3-SATA-adapter or enclosure as soon as possible and test my SSHD then again.

Hello,

I don't know if it is the same reason, but I have issues with copying files over USB, but 2.0.
I have several devices, an external hdd made by Eagle/Seagate, two Lycom USB adapters having 5 HDDs each.
Regardless the disk I copy to (the Lycom based racks make available each disk separately in my setup, not RAID), the transfer, made under KDE with Krusader or Dolphin, is absolutely weird. It goes from max to min from with a random frequency, but rather small, with 10 to 30 secs of transfer and some glitch that makes all KDE freeze for a second. I've tried Windows on the same PC, there I have no such glitches.

Another weird thing is that I copy files and I eject the drives, I power them down, then recently copied files are missing from the disks, and fsck does not find anything. It happens for EXT3, EXT4 and NTFS drives as well. I wait for a minute to be sure there is no activity first. Still happens.

I have the latest 4.10 kernel too, but I've noticed this for months, probably some thing changed in 4.10...

Any ideas?

Regards.
