Installing Nvidia GeForce 945M Driver

Postby jaxen » Sat Dec 03, 2016 20:35

Hi!
I am pretty new on sabayon, but as far as i can tell I like it very much...

I bought a new Acer Aspire V Nitro with a Nvidia GeForce 945M graphic card. After I installed Sabayon I wanted to install the drivers for the Nvidia. I followed the steps in the wiki...

https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Get_AMD/ATI_or_Nvidia_Video_Cards_working_in_Sabayon#NVIDIA

After installing the Drivers I was unable to come to the Desktop, i tryed very hard for some days, but at the end all a could see was the bootsplash.
So i setup a new sabayon and did not install the nvidia drivers.

Now, a few months late I want to try again, but I dont want to crash my system again because I need it for my work too!

So please can you give me any advice?

Sabayon ships with nvidia-drivers and on install will auto configure the drivers for you.
I have almost the same laptop as you have (Aspire V Nitro but with a 950M graphic card)

Just download a recently released 16.11 image. It should be fine.

Thank you for your answer...

That is the problem for me, i thought the Nvidia card should run "out of the box"... when I try to run the Nvidia X-Server settings I get the message:

Code: Select all
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.  Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

If I run
Code: Select all
nvidia-xconfig
as root Ill get the message

Code: Select all
nvidia-xconfig
bash: nvidia-xconfig: command not found

I don't know what to do...

I tried to run nvidia-settings in terminal in hope to get some more information. It looks like there is a problem with the registry key file...

Code: Select all
nvidia-settings could not find the registry key file. This file should
have been installed along with this driver at
       /usr/share/nvidia/nvidia-application-profiles-key-documentation. The
application profiles will continue to work, but values cannot be
prepopulated or validated, and will not be listed in the help text.
Please see the README for possible values and descriptions.

But I still don't know what to do?

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-370.28#4.6.0-sabayon

I believe Sabayon 16.11 ships with a 4.8 kernel. You didn't download and install that?

So, now I Installed

Code: Select all
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-370.28#4.7.0-sabayon

and don't set them active with

Code: Select all
eselect opengl set nvidia

otherwise I get an error message instead a login-screen...
Now I have to use primusrun/optirun to use the GPU but i can live with this!

I'm not sure if this will be relevent since you are working with a laptop, but I was recently seeing the same issue after doing a clean install of sabayon 17.1 (I have been trying to get a 3rd monitor on a different video card to work) Anyway, on my clean install I was seeing the same issue you are reporting here, I also tried reinstalling the Nvidia drivers, I installed the latest kernel, getting the same error messages you are.

I checked my BIOS settings for my display adapter, made sure the PRIMARY display adapter was set to PCIe, redid the clean install and voila! Nvidia drivers were installed by default! (though my 3rd monitor is still not accessible  )
