how to compile latest ati drivers

Post by tman7510 » Thu Dec 31, 2015 7:01

I'm sure somone has done this before but I dont see anything in the forum. I want to install the latest video drivers by ati but their installer fails to build the kernel module. I believe this is because it is expecting a 2.6.x kernel not 4.3 as I have running. Entropy has teh driver precompiled but only version 15.9 and I want te latest 15.12. I know I can make a package request but I would like to learn how to do this on my own so that I can always get the latest drivers without buging the package manager. I am currently having an issue with my new R9 390 and ATi tech support wants me to install the latest driver.

I appreciate any help the forum can offer.

Thnx

Have you visited our wiki? There is an article on there that talks about mixing Portage and Entropy. Portage is very well documented, the key is learning how to mix it in. There should even be an article on how to create your own community repo for making your own packages for entropy. I know there is a few people on the forum that have their own repo.

Brenton recently did his own wiki page on package managers that you may find interesting - http://fusion809.github.io/2015/12/24/p ... n-sabayon/

https://wiki.sabayon.org/ is where you can find our wiki with articles for what you're looking for.

15.12 ati-drivers aren't even in portage yet. https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=566846

I really suggest waiting and letting package maintainers work it out if you aren't sure what you are doing. Messing up GPU drivers can be a really frustration problem to solve.

Hi,

The other suggestion is to check with equo what is the most recent ATI driver and choose your kernel according to.

The latest is 15.9 for 4.3.0 Kernel.
wait... something isn't working...
RTFM? Done.
Wiki? Done
Google? Done.
Damn... bugzilla is scarrying me

15.12 ati-drivers are in portage testing now. Chances are, they will be in entropy pretty soon.
