External HD (2T) with lvm - can't open encrypted Partition

Postby raiding » Wed Oct 09, 2013 10:01

Hey Guys,

it's a mess ... I encrypted this HD a long time ago, with a Debian(testing) system, to backup some important data.
Now i can't decrypt it

That's the target:

Code: Select all
# fdisk

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdc: 2000.4 GB, 2000398931968 bytes, 3907029164 sectors
Units = Sektoren of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk label type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x000d13c3

Device       boot.     Beginn        End              Blocks       Id  System
/dev/sdc1               501758  3907022847  1953260545    f  W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sdc5        1638402048  3907022847  1134310400    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sdc6               501760  1638402047   818950144   8e  Linux LVM
Partition table entries are not in disk order

So if I try, to decrypt on the way, I've had always success:

Code: Select all
# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc6 secret
Device / dev/sdc6 is not a valid LUKS device.

Here I'll give you some additional information.
Hope it helps you, to help me :(

Code: Select all
# lvscan

(By the way: All other encryptet partitions where successfully decrypted and as you can see, volumegroups are working fine)

Hope, anybody could help me. I'm totaly confused :?

And YES I know, it wasa bad idea, to use lvm, because i wanted to encrypt my HD.
If I can luckily save my data, I plan to use truecrypt ...

Thanks for response :D

vg_fuckup ???
Well, What an appropriate name. :-)
But nothing is fu**ed up, yet.
Hopefully the Wiki can help you out.
Please apply the steps for Preparing LVM, (do not mount, yet) :
https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Mount_LVM

Once succeeded, apply these steps to decrypt and actually mount the volume... :
https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Mount_Encrypted_Partition
Good luck.
