problem with ATI card [Solved]

Postby VolvoBirkenstock » Sun Mar 31, 2013 18:31

Being a newbie to the Sabayon forums I may have posted my original question in the wrong place. I have a problem with a recent change to ATI driver/configuration and I need help. I posted this yesterday:

viewtopic.php?p=160901#p160901
I used the procedure detailed at the top of this "solved" thread, experienced problems after the procedure, and I don't know if that thread is still monitored.

The interactive terminals reserved for Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2, ..., Ctrl-Alt-F6 all show a double image, where the left-most column (call it col1) is also presented in the center column (call it colC1), the column next to col1 (call it col2) is also presented in colC2, and so on. Also, when the system is being shutdown and the user hits F2 (to observe shutdown progress), the display is also a double image. This problem is not seen during boot. Is there another configuration file that needs modification, or is this a known driver issue?

Re: problem with ATI card

I have noticed that during boot when Alt-F1 and later F2 are used, the fonts all look good. Prior to login after kdm has started, the fonts in Ctrl-Alt-F1 ... Ctrl-Alt-F6 terminal windows look "grey" and displaced such that a word that appears on the left edge of the monitor also appears just off of the right of center of the monitor, but in the same group of rows. This issue does not disappear while shutdown is ongoing and F2 is used to view progress, but clears up during reboot only to reappear around the same time as kdm restart.

Upon close inspection it appears that the even and odd lines of each font character are displaced, such that the even lines may be starting on the left edge of the monitor and the odd lines may be starting at the center of the monitor. When line wrap occurs and where the overlap of the even and odd lines contain portions of characters, the font appears white.

I know very little about video cards. Is there some additional information that is needed for experts to evaluate this problem?

I can't fully understand your problem, but it seems to be similar to one of a friend of mine with nouveau (on a laptop with nVIDIA integrated). Could you please post a photo of the weird terminal screen and also
Code: Select all
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thank you for looking into this!

As you requested I am trying to upload two attachments: dimbulb.jpg and Xorg_0_log.txt. The hostname is dimbulb.

I am having difficulty uploading both the JPEG and Xorg.0.log files. I am getting messages to the effect that the attachment quota has been reached. The JPEG is 213321 bytes. The Xorg.0.log file is 47914 bytes. I am also seeing messages regarding disallowed file extension types, so I have changed the name of the Xorg.0.log file to Xorg_0_log.txt and still cannot upload.

I will try again later. If these issues persist, is there some other way I can get this data to you?

Paste here the output using tag CODE. For the photo, use one of the image hosting available on the 'net and put here the link ;)

Thank you for your patience with this newbie.

The dimbulb.jpg photo can be seen here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/volvobirke ... /lightbox/
I ran a shell script that set a string to "dimbulb " and then output the string to stdout. For each newline I concatenated another "dumbulb " to that string and then output the string.

Note that the font moves from grey (even or odd rows but not both) to white (both even and odd rows) when line wrap (or line extension beyond one-half monitor width) causes both even and odd rows to combine. You can assume that the left-half of the monitor is using odd lines and the right-half of the monitor is using the even lines, so when they "wrap" or "overlap" both even and odd lines are lit to white. The regular X display does not have this problem. This problem is only seen in the "Ctrl-Alt-F1" through "Ctrl-Alt-F6" terminals and in the X display during the shutdown process. The default X background is blue with the word "sabayon" off to one side in white font, but during shutdown the word "sabayon" is centered and also mirrored to the left and right side of the monitor, almost as if the display settings have changed. If you use "F2" to view shutdown progress, you also observe the same issue that is seen in the dimbulb image.

The true resolution of my monitor is 1680x1050.

Here is the Xorg.0.log contents:

Re: problem with ATI card

Postby Matte88 » Fri Apr 05, 2013 0:31

I bet it was (quite) the same problem! As i can see, you're using ATI proprietary drivers and X display works fine (no errors): I can't understand why only the kernel shell is displayed so bad.
Sorry, but I never undesrtood the differences between how the GPU output is handled and passed to monitor by kernel and by X server... Maybe your issue is realted to the framebuffer??? Let's wait someone more expert! 8)

Thanks for looking at my problem, Matte88.

Just for clarification, the problem does not exist during boot. Once the login screen is provided, if you perform "Ctrl-Alt-F1" (or "Ctrl-Alt-Fn" where n = {1,2,...,6}), from then until shutdown is complete, you will see the strange issue shown at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/volvobirke ... /lightbox/
whenever you leave the "X" display.

Unfortunately, I had to reinstall the OS for a different reason (excessive overclocking... FS errors), and the re-install eliminated the problem. Logically, I the only difference is I did not copy over the /etc/ati directory, and I also disabled "consolefont" (in the boot section of rc scripts) and alternate VTY's and shutdown look normal now. Wish I had better info on the subject.

Hi, anomaly65. Could you please provide the directory file path to the "rc scripts" you mention? grep for consolefont gives locations like /lib64/rc/sh/init-early.sh. If you modified init-early.sh, did you comment out the conditional section starting with
Code: Select all
# Try and set a font and as early as we can
if service_present "$RC_DEFAULTLEVEL" consolefont ||
   service_present "$RC_BOOTLEVEL" consolefont; then
        printf "\033%s" "$termencoding" >"$CONSOLE" 2>/dev/null
        if [ -r "$RC_LIBEXECDIR"/console/font -a -x /usr/bin/setfont ]; then
                font="$(cat "$RC_LIBEXECDIR"/console/font)"
                [ -c "$CONSOLE" ] && cons="-C $CONSOLE"
                setfont $cons "$RC_LIBEXECDIR"/console/"$font" 2>/dev/null
        fi
fi

I also see /etc/conf.d/consolefont specifies consolefont="default8x16". Did you comment out
Code: Select all
consolefont="default8x16"
in /etc/conf.d/consolefont?

I will try whatever you say without a reinstall and let you know if it worked. A reinstall might be more pain than it is worth because I am new to Sabayon and do not want to harm personal data and configurations. Thanks for your great help!
