Radeon 8000 series card not detected

Postby chasha420 » Mon Mar 18, 2013 1:55

Hi guys, just bought a new laptop..and apparently I've yet to config the radeon card & it just doesn't work with amdcccle.

After installing amdcccle & using eselect to set ati as default (opengl), I'm in the fallback mode and when I start amdcccle control center it says initialisation error..with a message:

There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.

No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

It's a radeon HD 8750 card and here's the output of lspci:
Code: Select all
lspci| less

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 06)

As you can clearly see the radeon card is there, but I'm not sure what to do at this point cos it's been a while since I've used a radeon card and the last card had no issues at all.

Please let me know what to do.

Thanks.

Maybe your card is too recent for Linux drivers, dunno.
Output of
Code: Select all
$ equo q installed ati-drivers
$ equo q installe linux-sabayon

As for the other drivers, for kernel it's sabayon-linux-3.8 hardened and opengl is x-org cos the other one didn't work and I had was returned to fall-back mode in gnome3.

Let me know what else I can provide.

Thanks.

I see no radeon modules (open source ati drivers) runnning on your system, neither fglrx.
Try ATI beta proprietary drivers.
Please, # lspci -k

Re: Radeon 8000 series card not detected

Postby chasha420 » Tue Mar 19, 2013 5:54

Hello sorry for the double post...but I had a few questions...what if let's say I wish to go with the opensourced radeon drivers...what would I have to do to get it up and running? And also what is the current state of the opensource drivers for radeon...are they even close to being good or did AMD cease all dev. work on those ones? If opensource drivers have acceptable performance then I've no problem...please let me know :)

Thanks.

Sorry for the triple post Lol...I think I've finally figured out why amdcccle / proprietary drivers don't work.

As it always happens, proprietary video drivers fall short.
This time it's because we are, after one year, upgrading
X.Org to version 1.13. This means that some legacy drivers
have been removed:
- AMD Catalyst 12.6_beta_pre897
- NVIDIA legacy 96.xx
They don't work with the new X.Org, so either you are on your
own or have to switch to open source drivers.
Sorry, it's not our fault.

So if open source versions of the same drivers work I dont have a problem...in fact while updating I saw that the latest version of the driver got installed as well...time to mess around :P

I think your proprietary drivers are working 'cause fglrx exists and it's in use.
