Install Epson TX133-135 printer [Solved]

Postby Tedel » Tue Mar 12, 2013 14:32

Hello,

I tried to install my Epson printer yesterday, without success. I will describe the problem here:

According to the Linux Foundation, the printer works perfectly, and it does:
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/epson-201101w

When I download the driver, however, I get all the files in their respective place (under /opt/) and restart cups. The printer is recognized and installed, but I still can't print. I keep getting a... /opt/.../epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed ...error. The file is there, and its permissions should allow to print, but it still says the file not found or something. Here what I got from CUPS:

Code: Select all
[Job 4] Error: /invalidfont in /findfont
...
[Job 4] Last OS error: No such file or directory
...
[Job 4] GPL Ghostscript 9.06: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
...
[Job 4] PID 28554 (/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstopdf) stopped with status 1.
...
[Job 4] Failed to send: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
...
[Job 4] Failed to get profile filename!

If you need the full log file, let me know.

Any hints?

Gutenprint is already installed on Sabayon. Try simply adding your printer using CUPS.

This printer is not supported by Gutenprint. I double-checked.

I added the printer using CUPS already. It is recognizes. It scans. It doesn't print because of the error message written above.

Well, after a lot of trial and error, it seems I got to something. Using ArchLinux as workaround source, I compiled their epson driver from the AUR repository here...

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/epso ... r-201101w/

...and I could successfully print. So I copied the compiled driver to my pendrive, and run the Sabayon 11 KDE LiveDVD to check if it worked under Sabayon too. It worked.

Back to my computer with Sabayon, however, after copying the file, etc., the printer works, but not as it should:

- sometimes it prints properly
- sometimes it prints half of the page
- sometimes it doesn't print at all (filter failed error)

I am feeling confused...

I am thinking on two options for this:

One would be to ask a capable programmer to build an ebuild (I think that's how they call it in Gentoo) which could "translate" what ArchLInux driver does to the Gentoo/Sabayon distro.

Another could be to give a list of the printing-related packages installed in the Sabayon LiveDVD so I can check what I don't have yet.

I am really trying, OK? Hope someone here can help me.

EDIT:

I don't know if this helps but I could print an image file without problems
I cannot print a PDF file. I get a "Filter failed" error
I cannot print a Libreoffice file. I get only half of the page printed.

Hello,

I'm not really sure about how I solved this but I did. I cannot upload the full driver here, so I am uploading it to my Dropbox account, and here you have the link:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/90229091/epson- ... 01101w.zip

In short, copy and unzip this file in /opt/ and then change the permissions to make the filter file in cups/lib/ executable. Once that is done, start cups (localhost:631) and add your printer. It should work properly. I am already including the PPD files.

My suggestion is to take the AUR example I pointed in the previous post to create an ebuild. ArchLinux users already learned how to do that. You only need to translate it to Sabayon/Gentoo language.

I sincerely hope this helps. I'll mark the topic as solved in a moment.

Forgot to add:

Sometimes the printer is not recognized and Cups reports that it is waiting for it to become active to print. To avoid this, create a file...

/etc/udev/rules.d/10-usbprinter.rules
(Nano worked for me, but you can use any editor you want)

...including the following line:

ATTR{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTR{idProduct}=="0883", MODE:="0666", GROUP:={"lp"}, E$

Double-check if your information is correct using "lsusb" in a terminal.

Save and then unplug and replug the printer from the USB connection. It should start printing now.
