ATI drivers not installing [Solved]

Postby The Catboy » Mon Mar 04, 2013 19:42

Hello, I am rather new to Sabayon (and Gentoo for that matter) and I have been trying for the past few days to install the drivers for my HP Pavilion dv6-6c11nr Entertainment notebook, which is uses an AMD Radeon HD 6480G Shared video memory (UMA). I have tried everything from downloading the drivers provided in Rigo Application Browser to installing the Linux drivers provided by HP and nothing seems to work.
I tried to install them the way I normally installed them on other Linux distros, but I got this
Code: Select all
Supported adapter detected.
Check if system has the tools required for installation.
fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers.  /lib/modules/3.7.0-sabayon/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.
One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver.
Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools.
Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended.

So I updated my Linux kernel to the latest Linux kernel, but still get that error no matter what I tried to do.
Anyone able to help and tell me what I did wrong and how to fix it?

And on a side note, I installed Java, but I can't seem to make it work with my .jar files, what is the command I can use to set that up?
I just want to kill two birds with one stone, once I get this set up, I can figure out the rest from there.

Re: ATI drivers not installing

Is your PC equipped with dual GPU (in your case Intel+AMD/ATI)?
Meanwhile you can try
Code: Select all
# equo up --force && equo i entropy && equo u && equo deptest && equo i x11-drivers/ati-drivers
Even if in Sabayon you already have proprietary drivers installed and available for both nVIDIA and AMD/ATI.
Post please output of
Code: Select all
# lspci -v

You have only one GPU that is, in fact, integrated (source).
Just (re)install drivers as suggested (read here) and add nomodeset option at boot. Also you could remove open ati drivers after getting ati proprietary working!

Also how do I add nomodeset to my boot? Sorry I am extremely new to Sabayon after coming from Arch and Ubuntu, so I am still getting used to it.
And how do I remove the open ati drivers?

You don't need to exact-copy what's written in a wiki (generally speaking).

Simply do this, then

Tasks like "adding a boot options" (your case) are common to Linux distros, 'cause it's stuff realted to bootloader (we're speaking of GRUB2). Use a text editor powered by root privileges and add radeon.modeset=0 blacklist=radeon to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" string inside /etc/default/grub and
Code: Select all
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

Reboot and post glxinfo output.

Code: Select all

I did all that and they still don't appear to be working
Also I got this when I used glxinfo
Code: Select all
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  136 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
Minor opcode of failed request:  66 ()
Serial number of failed request:  13
Current serial number in output stream:  13

Also do you mean run
Code: Select all
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

From terminal or something?

And thanks for the part about java! ^_^

After you modify /etc/default/grub, GRUB2 needs to know that new config! :alien:
Run from terminal after adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 blacklist=radeon" and then reboot.
