Integrated webcam don't work [Solved]

Post by tinogil » Sat Sep 22, 2012 23:34

I installed sabayon XFCE in an old laptop hp pavilion dv-1000, all is working except the integrated webcam. In /dev there aren't any video device. The webcam is a ricoh webcam 1000. Any idea about how can I get to work the cam?.

Re: Integrated webcam don't work

Post by linuxfluesterer » Mon Sep 24, 2012 17:27

In your lsmod I can't find something like that:
uvcvideo 57191 0
videobuf2_vmalloc 2073 1 uvcvideo
videobuf2_memops 2231 1 videobuf2_vmalloc
videobuf2_core 15208 1 uvcvideo
videodev 83849 2 uvcvideo,videobuf2_core
media 8162 2 uvcvideo,videodev
I assume, the cam is not recognized by Sabayon usb driver uvcvideo (your cam is listed in lsusb as device 002).
Try to load manually with 'modprobe uvcvideo' as root in a console. then check lsmod output for 'uvcvideo'.
Another try is to connect an external webcam (maybe check as root in console with dmesg for new device)
then try lsmod again for a 'video...' entry.
Your cam should be newer date.
If you have bad luck, then your built-in webcam is not supported in Sabayon as module... :(

I loaded in the terminal the uvcvideo and the cam din't work, I connected an external cam and this worked. I must think that the integrated cam is not supported. Maybe another idea? if not I'll close tomorrow with (solved) this thread.

I've googled a bit. A possible module you'll need is r5u870.ko especially for your Ricoh R5U870 Webcam with id: 05ca:1870.
This is the website: http://www.arakhne.org/ricoh/
But I haven't found it here for Sabayon and to build by sources for Sabayon I don't know how.
If you find the source code and a Sabayon forum member can help you to compile, I see a chance.
Sorry, but that's all I can do for you...

linuxfluesterer, according to several threads in the Ubuntu Forums, Ubuntu users with that model of webcam had to blacklist the module uvcvideo, so I do not think the OP wants it to be loaded. Looking at another Ubuntu thread and a Gentoo Wiki article, it at first looks like the OP needs to install the package media-video/ov51x-jpeg which is in a few Portage overlays, including the sabayon overlay, (http://gpo.zugaina.org/media-video/ov51x-jpeg) and load the module. However, I see that the SL kernel config contains CONFIG_USB_GSPCA_OV519=m (so the module was built) and that appears to be what the OP needs (http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/USB_GSPCA_OV519.html) so I suggest he first tries loading that module to see if that gets the webcam working:

Code: Select all

modprobe gspca_ov519
(entered as root user in a Konsole/Terminal window)

Hallo Fitzcarraldo...
I'm honest, I haven't ever read about a blacklist of uvcvideo module.
More than that, when uvcvideo was available for me (with Kubuntu) I got my USB-webcams finally working and I was glad, that the various different drivers were no more necessary for me to make a usb webcam working.
Yes, I really wonder... as I said, I never had a problem, and also Skype began to work with my webcams then.
And just here on my Sabayon X laptop from August 2010 usvcvideo.ko is loaded...
But Tino's webcam is much okder than made for uvcvideo, so I agree with you, trying another driver for his R5U870 webcam.
If that gspca_ov519 module suits for him, great!

Hi to all.
I tried the gspca with modprobe, cam didn't work, I tried to emerge the ov51x-jpeg and got: there not ebuilds to satisfy media-video/ov51x-jpeg, I think that this driver is not on line more, rastageeks.org is not loading and I don't know if this is temporally or don't work anymore.

Oh, well, it was worth a shot. To be honest, it's so old that the chances of you getting it working are next to zero. The other module, suggested by linuxfluesterer, is r5u870 but that is also as old as the hills and unsupported. There is an ebuild for it in the Gentoo Bugzilla (see Report No. 176824) but no version for 3.* kernels, so the chances of getting it to build are basically nil. Your best bet is probably to buy one of those tiny USB webcams for laptops that clip onto the top edge of the screen.
