ExpressCard adapter for USB 3.0 not detected

Postby gocool » Wed May 23, 2012 17:50

Short description of the issue:
StarTech.com 2-Port Flush Mount ExpressCard 54mm SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter is not detected by Sabayon.

Detailed description of the issue:
I have a 1.5 TB external USB 3.0/2.0 compatible drive which works fine in my USB 2.0 port. But I wanted to use the full potential of the drive by having a USB 3.0 port in my laptop. So I ordered a StarTech.com 2-Port Flush Mount ExpressCard 54mm SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter and plugged in. But it's not being recognized by my laptop. I checked my dmesg, did a lsusb, lspci but no where I am seeing this device. In IRC someone suggested me to upgrade to the latest kernel, which I did using kernal-switcher but still no luck.

My machine details :
Current with all the updates
Kernel : 3.3
Other details: x86, 32bit, KDE

Any help on this will be highly appreciated.

Since I am not in front of my laptop, I wont be able to provide the logfiles, but let me know which ones to be provided and I'll uploaded it as soon as I get to it.

This card?: http://uk.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/U ... r~ECUSB3S2

Uses the Renesas/NEC µPD720200 chipset, which may be supported by the Linux kernel (http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux ... 14/6264778) or may not (http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-List ... 05861.html).

Post the output of the following commands executed as root user in a Konsole/Terminal window and with the card inserted:

Code: Select all
lspci
lsusb
lsmod
hwinfo --usb
dmesg | grep -i usb
cat /var/log/messages | tail -n 500 | grep -i error
cat /var/log/messages | tail -n 500 | grep -i usb
zcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i xhci

So... StarTech model ECUSB3S254F then. Chances are the guts are the same as the other StarTech card.

I'm not on a machine running SL, but I suspect the SL kernel does not have CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD set:

Code: Select all
# zcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i xhci
CONFIG_USB_ARCH_HAS_XHCI=y
# CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD is not set

If you check your kernel and find that it is indeed not set then I suggest you rebuild your kernel (see HOWTO: Upgrade kernel using genkernel) with that parameter set. If you don't feel able to do that, click on the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page and file a request for that parameter to be set in the kernel, with an explanation of why and full details of your card and the outputs from all the above-mentioned commands (or a link to this thread if you post the outputs in this thread).

Sorry to spam the thread, but have just seen the following: Might be wise to set CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD to Y [as opposed to setting to M]. If the SL developers do agree to your request via the SL Bugzilla (if you decide to file one) then it would be better for them to set it to be built in-kernel (Y) rather than an external kernel module (M) for the reason given in that Red Hat Bugzilla Bug Report.

Thank you Fitzcarraldo. This helps and you are right, when I gave the following command
# zcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i xhci

the output is like you mentioned:

Code: Select all
CONFIG_USB_ARCH_HAS_XHCI=y
CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD=m
# CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD_DEBUGGING is not set

I would file a bug and reference this thread to them. Once again no amount of appreciation to your prompt and timely response will do justice to the help you rendered.

[Do you still want me to post the output of the other commands which you suggested?]

Yes.

Also, I see that your kernel has CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD=m, which means it is built as an external kernel module. Is that module loaded? That is one reason to post the output of the command lsmod. If the module is not loaded, it might be that you could get your ExpressCard working simply by loading the module. I assume the module will be called something like xhci or xhci-hcd or xhci_hcd. Post the outputs and let's see what you've got.

Re: ExpressCard adapter for USB 3.0 not detected

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Wed May 23, 2012 22:26

OK, I've not looked through it all yet, but I don't see any module loaded with 'xhci' in the name. So, just in case it gets you a quick result, try the following commands as root user:

Code: Select all
modprobe xhci
modprobe xhci-hcd
modprobe xhci_hcd
lsmod | grep -i xhci

What output do the above produce? And does you USB 3 external HDD then work if you plug in the drive to the ExpressCard? Try the above commands before you plug in the ExpressCard, and, if you get no joy, reboot and try them again after you plug in the ExpressCard.

This is what I gave ...

modprobe xhci-hcd
lsmod | grep -i xhci

gave the following output

Code: Select all
xhci_hcd               53587  0

I couldnt remove the adapter as it is way inserted into the bay. I need a forcep or any other pointed tool to remove it. I rebooted it and tried but it's not recognizing.
