does anyone know how to get the volume buttons to work on a lenovo thinkpad t60?

I don't have your model of laptop, so can only offer advice. Is the T61 similar to the T60? If so, have a look at the Gentoo linux (SL is based on Gentoo) Wiki article on the Lenovo T61 for configuring the volume control buttons:

http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Lenovo_T ... me_control

See also the Gentoo Forums thread Problem with volume control key (SOLVED) which may be of help.

I had to do the following:

# modprobe snd-hda-intel model=AD1981
# echo "options snd-hda-intel model=AD1981" >> /etc/modules.d/alsa
# update-modules

Now it is working :D
