Nvidia: can't use the console tty1

Postby speedyx » Sat May 21, 2011 19:06

On my nvidia laptop with saby 5.5 K updated I can't use CTRL+ALT+F1 to use the tty console. Have you the same behavior?

Is it only TTY1 that you cannot access, or none of them? Could it be something simple like the following recent problem posted on the Gentoo Forums: Cannot switch to any consoles?

Can you describe what happens. You use KDE if I recall correctly? If you enter Ctrl-Alt-F1, does absolutely nothing happen? Can you still use the DE, or does it lock up? Have you looked in /var/log/messages to see if there are any error messages at the time you press Ctrl-Alt-F1? Also, are there any warning messages or error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Have you made any changes to your keyboard mapping in the past that may have affected this? Do you have the file ~/.Xmodmap, for example? If you open a Konsole and run the xev utility, what does it display when you press Ctrl-Alt-F1?

In addition to the above, there are several other possible causes of this behaviour. For example, I had this problem some time ago after merging the latest version of ati-drivers, and the solution (which I found in the Gentoo Forums) was to re-install xf86-input-keyboard, xkeyboard-config and xkbcomp. Even though you are using an NVIDIA GPU, you could try re-installing those three packages to see if that solves the problem.

Please post your /boot/grub/grub.cfg file.

Does the chvt command work? For example, chvt 1 to switch to TTY1, and chvt 7 to switch back to KDE?

Hmm... Please also post the output of the lsmod command.

Something I'd try if I were you, would be to edit grub.cfg and remove the vga=791 parameter (although you need a LiveDVD handy in case you cannot reboot and have to revert to the previous grub.cfg):

Code: Select all
# cp /boot/grub/grub.cfg /boot/grub/grub.cfg.bak
# nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg

What is the native resolution of your frame buffer? See the SL Wiki article HOWTO: change the resolution of your framebuffer. It could just be that the "791" in the vga=791 is not compatible with your frame buffer.
