Xerox MFprinter (samsung driver) can't print

Postby speedyx » Thu Mar 17, 2011 18:40

I have a multifunction printer that worked with Linux on many distributions, Gentoo too, with the Samsung Unified Linux Driver from the Samsung download site.
Since I installed Sabayon 5.5 KDE x86 on my netbook, It can't print.
Cups show me the printer, but say that "cups-missing-filter" error.
I tried with the one from the calculate overlay but the problem still exist.
I can see the printer in CUPS, but it can't print the test page or a page in libreoffice.
How can bypass the cups error?

I have a Xerox WorkCentre PE114e that I always used with the Samsung SCX-4100, 4200 or 4300 driver.
The OpenPrinting.org deleted the printer from their database.

Have you tried the latest driver ebuild (samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1.ebuild) from Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 139715? More likely to install the driver properly in a Gentoo/SL environment than installing from the Samsung tarball. You would need to install it in a local overlay using Portage.

Thank you for your kindly reply.

I followed the instructions here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-82 ... art-0.html
But I get the error:
# ebuild /usr/local/portage/overlay/app-misc/samsung-unifieddriver/samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1.ebuild manifest

Appending /usr/local/portage/overlay to PORTDIR_OVERLAY...
Error(s) in metadata for 'app-misc/samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1':
RDEPEND: USE flag 'qt4' referenced in conditional 'qt4?' is not in IUSE

Have you any suggest? It is the first time I create a local overlay.

In the ebuild file I added at the variable IUSE the qt4 flag.
But I still have an error...

Appending /usr/local/portage/overlay to PORTDIR_OVERLAY...
!!! FETCHCOMMAND does not contain the required ${FILE} parameter.
!!! Refer to the make.conf(5) man page for information about how to
!!! correctly specify FETCHCOMMAND and RESUMECOMMAND.
!!! Fetch failed for samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62.tar.gz, can't update Manifest

I will study and googly..

Not sure. But below is what I would do if I wanted to install the package using the ebuild from Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 139715:

1. Download the ebuild:

Code: Select all
$ wget http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=227965 --output-document=/home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1.ebuild

2. Synchronise the Portage main tree’s ebuilds on my PC with those in the repositories:

Code: Select all
# emerge --sync

3. Add the Portage Sabayon overlay if it is not already added, and synchronise the Portage Sabayon overlay's ebuilds on my PC with those in the repositories:

Code: Select all
# layman -a sabayon # Do not worry if a message says it is already added.
# layman -S

(If a message says that git is not installed, then install it using either Entropy or Portage, then repeat the above layman commands.)

4. Make sure that /etc/make.conf has the following lines at the end of the file:

Code: Select all
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage/"
ACCEPT_LICENSE="*"

5. Create the required directories in the local overlay:

Code: Select all
# mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/net-print/samsung-unifieddriver/files

6. Make sure Portage would not nag me about a missing name for my local overlay:

Code: Select all
# mkdir /usr/local/portage/profiles
# echo "local_overlay" > /usr/local/portage/profiles/repo_name

7. Copy the ebuild into the relevant directory in the local overlay:

Code: Select all
# cd /usr/local/portage/net-print/samsung-unifieddriver
# cp /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1.ebuild .

8. Generate the manifest for the package:

Code: Select all
# ebuild samsung-unifieddriver-3.00.62-r1.ebuild manifest

9. Merge the package:

Code: Select all
# emerge -1v samsung-unifieddriver

If you still get no joy using the above procedure, try the alternative ebuild in Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 256564 instead.

Code: Select all
wget http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=256564 --output-document=/home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/samsung-unified-linux-driver-1.01.ebuild

I want to try the method you suggested and I thank you for your responses.
I was busy and answer only now.
The printer works well with an alternative standard driver of a compatible Xerox printer, specifically the 3119.
The overlay method is very interesting. Maybe in the future I will try it and I will post my experience.
For now, long life to gentoo/sabayon. :D

This solution works only for the printer part, not for the scanner. VERY HAPPY!! :D
