Any recomm. how to change default boot in GRUB2? [Solved]

Postby Gustav » Fri Feb 25, 2011 14:41

Hi,
I have Windows XP and installed SL from Sabayon_Linux_x86_5.5_K.iso
giving me a dual (triple, counting LS recovery mode) boot.

However I'd like to have XP booted as default instead of SL.
Is there any simple, safe, recommended HOWTO change the default boot?

Incidentally, just after "GRUB loading, Welcome to GRUB!", during a fraction of a second, a text displayed "error: no such file".

Thanks
Gustav

If the beginning of the file /etc/default/grub already looks like the excerpt below then you don't need to do anything other than select Windows XP from the GRUB 2 menu next time you boot; from then onwards, Windows XP will be the default to boot until you change the default by selecting something else in the GRUB 2 menu.

Code: Select all
# /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Sabayon"
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5

If the beginning of /etc/default/grub does not look like the above then edit it and run the following command as root user:

Code: Select all
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

and then the functionality will be as I described above.

Moving this thread to the Hardware section as it's not an installation issue.

Thanks Fitzcarraldo,
The line
Code: Select all
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
was missing.
Now it works fine.

Thanks again.
