video issue after update

Postby oirv » Fri Jan 21, 2011 22:19

Hi, I apologize for my English.

Sabayon 5.4, kernel 2.6.35, KDE 4

After doing an upgrade package, there was a problem with the video, I cant open games, the title bars disappear and appear, the buttons are glitched, mixed with other images, I have not 3D acceleration, and my login screen is a mess:

logging is a pain

Maybe try a later kernel version.
Many things changed with KMS / Opensource video drivers.

oirv,

if you're not able to login e.g. the screen becomes blank while booting and doesn't come back, choose at the bootdisplay the Sabayon GNU/Linux, with Linux x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon (recovery mode)
This time while booting, you will be asked for your root password - and no X will come up, you will be in a writeprotected environment.
Now you must reenable writing by doing the command
df (that will list all your disks)
mount -o rw,remount /dev/sda1 (if your / partition is sda1 ...exchange sda1 with whatever it is)
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup (that will move away your xorg.conf and on the next start a new xorg.conf will be written).
sync (writes back the change to disks)
reboot (restarts your pc)

This time I guess your screen won't freeze and become blank - but after 1-2 minutes, your login manager will show up again.

In case this doesn't help by redoing the procedure and exchanging step 3 against
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf
you can bring back the old xorg.conf.

Good night,

Karl

thanks for the advice, but I had already tried that
kernel 2.6.37, X is still frozen.
kernel 2.6.36, .35 and .33 X works, but I still have the problem of video

strange detail, the new "x.config" file is empty

From other posts iv read the kernel 2.6.37 is not stable. I would suggest to continue using the .36 or .35 for now.

are the other glitches fixxed , is it just the video now ? iv had a problem with the VLC media player myself and ive installed Dragon Player and that seems to work fine.

Intel GPUs.

If you can get to a console, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change:

Code: Select all
Driver "intel"

to:

Code: Select all
Driver "vesa"

and install the package xf86-video-vesa if it is not already installed.

thanks for the advice
Unfortunately, I had already tried that with disastrous results, (I've tried things I have read on other forums).
vesa driver did not work, the screen went black with random pixels, in graphic and text mode, luckily I was back to my glitched desk.

I tried several things to no avail, maybe I give up and wait for some "magical update" to fix the problem.

I'm moving this to the Hardware shed (forum) as it's not an issue with the Desktop Environment or Compiz, it's an issue with Intel GPUs (specifically the X.Org driver and/or X.Org server and/or Linux kernel).
