audio problem (SBx00 Azalia)

Post by DanAlucard » Fri Dec 24, 2010 13:15

Hi, i have an issue with sound.
Please, ignore my signature. i'm using a different PC.
First, i want to tell that i have installed the Sabayon 5.4 XFCE release, and then updated via entropy and installed the kde-meta package. All worked fine, except audio.
When i start, kmix is silenced, but i can un-silence it. When i try to play something (using vlc or dragon players), like 0,5 seconds are played and then kmix is muted again.

here is some data about my system:

kernel: 2.6.36-sabayon
platform: AMD Athlon II 250 (dual core, 3.0GHz) with AMD 740 chipset

Had the same problem to start with. Can't for sure tell you the answer, only that it was pulse related. I searched the forum for "pulse" and I'm sure the answer was there.

Sorry no more help.

@NoSavy: thanks for your answer. I will give it a try
will post the results in a few minutes

EDIT: Nope... the PulseAudio guide by Fitzcarraldo (getting pulseaudio to cooperate) doesn't work for me.
I have disabled Pulseaudio by renaming the binary (as posted in the 4th comment of the Fitzcarraldo's thread) and the same issue happens.

i dunno what to do.
tryed running alsaconf and alsamixer again, and all seems to be good, but the problem persists. :?

any help wil be nice! :D

i have found an interesting thing: :)
it seems to be a "sound strength" related problem.
I know that it sounds extrange  , but I can explain:

I have deactivated pulseaudio (now i'm using pure ALSA).
In Kmix, i have left the front channel in 60% and voila! i can play stereo audio without problems.

BUT:
1.- if I set the volume to a higher level, when i play something it is muted again and again...
2.- if i use VLC and slide the VLC's special volume amplifier, the sound is also muted.

so, i think this is a strange thing...

I have similar sound problems as you describe with other distro's. SL 5.4 is OK though. But, Everytime I reboot from windows to sabayon, I have zero sound. But a cold boot or reboot from sabayon, no sound problems at all.

If anyone can explain this, I'd like to hear it. I've proved this repeatedly over and over.

Did you try this?

Go to system preferences, then to Multimedia, then Phonon.
Check that your audio device is first in the list and set first for all categories.

yes, i've tried it out, as I've said at the bottom of the main post
but thanks dragonauta

I'm just using it at 60% volume and no problem, but need to have the (physical) speakers at a high level consuming more energy.

this an annoying thing, because sometimes I accidentally pull up the volume and then, is muted :|

any help will be greatly appreciated
