Installing Brother MFC5490cn networked printer [Solved]

Post by billk » Sun Jun 14, 2009 5:22

 Sabayon 4.1 KDE 64 bit is a really great, easy to install, easy to set up, easy to use distro. However, it looks like I will have to abandon it because I cannot find any way to install my networked Brother MFC5490cn printer. Can anyone give me instructions. The available drivers are deb and rpn 32 bit. Thanks.
Solved :)

Have you had a look in Sabayon wiki, if not here is a link
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... er_Printer

I done a quick search on the brother web site (Australia) your printer is supported under linux, the brother printer drivers are very easy to install as long as you follow the instructions that brother and sabayon wiki give

Have fun

Thanks for your reply. However, one of my first attempts to install the printer was though these steps. The emerge command did not accomplish anything. I do not recall the exact message, but it was something like no rpm. Later I tried changing the rpm files into tz.g??? files. That worked, but I still could not install the drivers. Any other ideas?

Sorry I assumed (and I should know better) I deserve a kick in the behind!

Other than that the assumption is that you have attempted to install as root, and you have tried a few times to install as per the instructions (just in case you you typed an error)
Try again but document what you do and copy and paste any errors, that way when we ask what the error was or is, we may have an idea of what has gone wrong

It is important that you have the rpm package installed, seeing you have had problems with the emerge command, I suggest that you use equo or select and install rpm-4.4.7-r4 using sulfur, then continue from step 2 in the HOWTO: Install a Brother Printer

I just installed the brother printers on my backup system using the info from HOWTO: Install a Brother Printer, I couldn't install the printer normally (last part of step 7 in wiki) like we did in KDE3

After searching KDE 4 forum, I found that system-config-printer is not installed, so if you do want to use the good old Cups, you should install kde-base:system-config-printer-kde-4.2.1 (I used sulfur to install) then continue to install the printer normally as root

To open system-config-printer-kde as root, open a terminal (konsole) and type
kdesu system-config-printer-kde

Then select New printer (left side of window), New printer (right side of window) it will search and find the drivers you installed (as per the wiki) select your printer, click Forward, select Brother, click Forward, select your model, select the one that has (recommended) next to it, click Forward, type something in the Description section (I just typed MFC165C) then click OK and print a test page

All that worked for me

Thanks for your help. I am learning. I have now been able to follow all of the instructions for installing a Brother printer, except the last one. And that step prevents actual installation in CUPS. I am not able to copy the file to the appropriate folder. The message is cannot create regular file. No such file or directory. Yet the file exists and I can copy it to other folders, just not to usr/libexec/cups/filter/ I have tried doint it from the command line with root authority. I have tried copy and paste in Dolphin. Same results. Any other ideas?
Thank you for helping a Sabayon novice. (though I have some experience with several other distributions, and over 20 years of advanced Windows work).

 Problem solved!
On the Gentoo Wiki Archives I found information related to another Brother model that is missing on the Sabayon document "HowTo: Install a Brother Printer." The very last step of copying the file never worked for me. However after I executed the following 2 commands as root afterfollowing steps 1 -5, then I could install the printer in Cups:
csh -f cupswrappermfc5490cn.csh
Then link the filter:
ln -s /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrappermfc5490cn /usr/libexe/cups/filter/brlpdwrappermfc5490cn
Then I went to the CUPS utility in the standard menu and installed the printer. It works!

billk, it would be a good idea if you amended the SL Wiki article. That way you will be helping future users with the same problem.

Also, will you please click on the EDIT button in your first post of this thread and add "[Solved]" to the end to the Subject text. Thanks.

billk,

could you please post the steps you went through to get it running step by step ?

I'm trying to get a mfc6490cw running

unfortunately it either won't print at all or just print stupid stuff when trying to print a test-page (a almost completely black page and thus quickly emptying the cartridges - yay !)

many thanks in advance
