Error while initializing the sound driver sabayon 4.0 r1

Postby bloodyscript » Sat Jan 10, 2009 17:26

hi i recently upgraded from mini edition 3.4 to 4.0 r1. the sound worked on mini edition and the live cd. but the second reboot after the instaltion i get an error message in kde:

"Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

alsactl restore:
localhost sircody # alsactl restore
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC662 rev1" "HDA:10ec0662" "0x1565" "0x820f"

if you need dmesg ill send the out put. ive done alsa config and then go into ever mixr i have and rasie unmute all volume make sure is on the right card. then open juk player and i still get no sound. but whats weird is that in kaffine player the sound will play but only for half a song than it will display [A_O] audio output device is busy. and i loose all the sound once again. i belive my graphics card is trying to be the default sound card when im not useing hdmi. im not the greatest linux user and have been trying to solve the problem but its like running into a wall thinking theres a door there.
oh yea my user is in the audio group and root has the same problem. thank you for the help.

bloodyscript, have you tried K Menu > Control Centre > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System and, below the Hardware tab, change 'Select the audio device:' from 'Autodetect' to 'Advanced Linux Sound Architecture' (and click Apply)? If that makes no difference, strange as it may seem, try unticking 'Enable the sound system' on the General tab (and click Apply). I used to have to do this in an earlier incarnation of SL in order to get sound to work under ALSA.

Although I have had no trouble with audio under SL in the last few releases, the other day I listened to some music with Audacious under SL 3.5 and afterwards lost all sound and had the error message that you mentioned. I rebooted and have not had a problem since. Strange.

wolfden, yes i did alsaconf many times, it makes kaffine media player play sound for about a minute. then it displayes a error message "[A_O] audio output device busy." and the sounds stops.

fitzcarraldo, just tried it and it displayed the same error message

I thought must of that was resolved in latest kernel

in step two it states to do modeprobe snd-hda-intel then use "your modle name" useing the chart above the line that has my card
834 ALC662
835 3stack-dig 3-stack (2-channel) with SPDIF

did i enter the name incorrectly? thats the same card found in kinfo center under sound

localhost sircody # modprobe snd_hda_intel model=ALC662
localhost sircody # dmesg | grep hda
[ 20.779946] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC662, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
[ 4467.442757] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC662, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

[ 4821.689137] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC662, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

previously i tried entering my bios {biostar} and turn on on-board sound but couldnt fidn the option in any of the menus.

ok so i add sum options to the etc/modules.d/alsa file options snd cards_limit=1
options snd_hda_intel index=0
options snd_hda_intel model=3stack-dig

then i did /etc/init.d/alsasound restart. what happend was that i still get the error message but now kaffine payer plays sound like nobodys buisness its the only player the plays sound currently. i downloaded rythmbox from spritz package manager and im not 100% sure if it worked correctly. every time i play a song it it had the red circle with a line through it. going down hte entire list of songs then eventualy it freezes and the dialog box comes up asking to force quite or cancel.

im confused as to whats going on with my sound this is the first time i ever had any kind of problems useing sabayon linux. its still my favorite browser and i will be trying to fix it so i can get the full experince out of 4.0.

ok my bad i posted b4 i acualy listen to kaffine media player this morning last night it was working under gnome ithought mayb it was kde that was messing with the sound but only kaffine player i gnome worked. in kde all sound is gone inless i do alsaconf then afterwards sound works in kaffine player and only kaffine player.
