can not get X11 working with x86_64 3.4 Mini Edition

Post by drkstr » Wed Jul 23, 2008 4:14

Hello,

I just installed Sabayon x86_64 3.4 Mini Edition and I'm having trouble getting X11 working.

After the install I did the following

# sh /scripts/emerge-kernel.sh (or something like that)
# emerge ati-drivers;
# env-update && source /etc/profile
# modprobe fglrx
# eselect opengl set ati
# /opt/bin/aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 but the lspci didn't seem to pick it up. X11 crashes out when I startx.

lspci output: http://pastebin.com/m69e5f4c
xorg.conf: http://pastebin.com/d406b2fd9
Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/m117dd11c

I'm all out of ideas, could anyone help point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Ah, well that explains my confusion. Guess my bag of tricks is a little out dated.

So I'm trying to get a handle on this init system as it's not quite what I'm used to.

When I boot up I'm brought right to the console, which is what I would expect with the default run level of init 3. What confuses me though, is that xdm is already started when I login to the tty (just not spawned on any VT). What I'm used to doing is setting a default runlevel that spawns xdm. I do see the line in the inittab that runs the wrapper script 'startDM.sh', but I'm not sure how to set this as the default init (setting it to 'a' didn't work). SO I guess my question is how do I get the display manager to spawn at init? Sorry if my terminology was a bit off. I'm far from being an expert on this stuff.

Thanks for the help!

I ended up doing a no-disk install of Sabayon 3.5 from the mini edition. I got it working in 3.5 with a few extra boot parms. Still curious to know how X11 is spawned though. If you have time, could you give me a brief explanation or point me to something I can read?

Thanks!
