unless you got red stars next to that traceback everything's fine - it's not terribly likely that portage didn't build correctly, and if it did you'd best start a new topic with the subject "portage fails installing portage". The first bit is nothing to worry about, so just run an etc-update and layman -d && layman -a sabayon and continue. If you got red stars, then you are quite unlucky.

I now get the following error. I have a feeling it's serious :(

Code: Select all

I've never seen that error before, so I'll need to know a bit more context - what were you doing at the time it occurred? I just noticed that you're going to need a new subversion - emerge subversion and then try to re-sync the sabayon overlay (as per the last post)

I was on the second step, i.e., etc-update. What should I do now?

Also: I had another go with the Sab 3.5 DVD, except this time I burnt and attempted to install it on a DELL XPS 1530 Laptop. I got the same first screen freeze on it. I had done the md5 and write-verification. So apparently, it's not just my box that's being quirky.

could be your media that's being quirky, because that laptop works with 3.5L3 (I have it)... try to buy a new spindle? Just to be safe, once you've emerged subversion could you repeat the steps from the beginning again?

Okay, let me check this up with you again

First

Code: Select all
emerge subversion

Then repeat steps from
Code: Select all
emerge --sync && emerge -O portage && emerge portage && layman -d sabayon && layman -a sabayon

Onwards?

yep - let me actually modify what I said slightly. first
Code: Select all
emerge portage subversion && echo "Good to Go!"

If you don't see the "good to go", something's not happening correctly. Otherwise go with the

Code: Select all
emerge --sync && emerge -O portage && emerge portage && layman -d sabayon && layman -a sabayon
.

I got the 'Good to Go'. However, on etc-update, I still get:

are you running etc-update with -3 or with -9? When do you get that message? Right after popping in the command, or after trying to merge stuff?
