New ATI drivers - no joy

Postby Ph0eniX » Fri Feb 01, 2008 16:58

Hi,
I just upgraded my kernel to the latest Sabayon release and decided to upgrade the ATI drivers as well (my card: Radeon X1950 Pro/fglrx driver). X won't start since the upgrade because it's missing the PCS database:

/etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default

I'm reading that this is a bug in the new driver. I'm wondering if anyone has a workaround. Should I just go with an older driver?

Thanks! :D

Which specific driver package? ati-drivers-8.452-r10?

I never had any joy with the 8.443 series and have not tried the 8.452 series yet (but will do so in a couple of weeks time when I'm back home). My ATI card is not the same as yours, but the 8.443 series drivers were a disaster in my case: they killed all video -- even text mode -- and I had to chroot into my installation from a LiveDVD to re-install the earlier version ati-drivers-8.433-r10, which works well really, apart from the flickering Google Earth and videos (the latter is easy to work around by switching to X11 drivers in VLC, MPlayer, KMPlayer, Kaffeine etc.)

Yes, it's the 8.452-r10 package. The drivers don't fail to compile it's just that the above mentioned file doesn't get copied to /etc/ati during installation. If someone could post the contents of theirs, that would be great. I'm not sure that's the way to go but it's worth a try.

Interesting because, at least in in my case, for the earlier driver ati-drivers-8.433-r10 there is no /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default file, only the file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb

On the off chance it's of any use to you, the contents of my /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file are:

Code: Select all
AMDPCSDBV1
[AMDPCSROOT/SYSTEM/LibXUtil/Display1]
Map=V0
Enable=V1
[AMDPCSROOT/SYSTEM/LDC]
LastViewedPage=SDisplay Manager
HelpDisabled=V0
LinkedAllSliders:1=V1
LinkedAllSliders:2=V1

It didn't work but thanks for the file.
Here's what I get when starting X:
(EE) fglrx(0): Unable to initialize PCS database
(EE) fglrx(0): Missing PCS defaults file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default

Joy!
Instead of "emerge ati-drivers" I did "module-rebuild rebuild" and X is happy now.

I have /etc/ati/amdpcsdb now.

Thank you! :D
