I have followed the intrstucions in this topic, but with no success...

alsaconfig detects the card model and configures 'correctly' but with no result. modprobe with model=toshiba does not work either. :|

amarok is very slow and buggy with the drivers in this state - sometimes crashing, otherwise does not play files in time and will freeze periodically.

does this card require different ALSA drivers?

Could be 3.4e or 3.4f you are using.

The driver seems to work or SL seems to be able to talk to the audio card with correct driver.

Getting amarok to work or reinstalling amarok might fix it for you if this is only amarok related. Search the forums for amarok fix as it should have been posted in early december or late november.

Try to use any of the other audio player and see if it is only amarok or all , if all then driver needs to be fixed likely.

# emerge -s amarok
# emerge -p amarok
# emerge amarok

Note nothing like update used as update should only in part reinstall amarok but emerge amarok = full replace of currently installed amarok = fixes broken something likely or this is how it should work.

You can also try
# revdep-rebuild -X
this should fix any known broken links or missing deps or similar , but first try the fix for amarok as posted in the forums / wiki.

Sorry, I should have been more specific on my version - it is x86_64-3.4.miniEdition

I tried playing an sudio cd in SMplayer and that seems to function fine, but still no sound. Might pay to follow those instructions for Amarok but likely not a solution...

Yup if both fails then alsa driver could be unhappy.

# alsaconf
or
# alsaconfig

One of them would work then yes let it do it's thing and it should load the module for the sound + next launch the kmix and see if the sound gets thru or kill kmix and launch it again. Likely you should have sound now.

If not try to check the bios settings during pc boot maybe something is unhappy or it needs and alternative driver to be loaded or a fixed one to be downloaded.

Best is to try after this the irc / web chat top right of this page likely someone there would eb able to give you better advice.
