No sound in Sabayon 3.4e

Postby Balulu » Fri Dec 28, 2007 5:00

I am running into problems with my sound in Sabayon Linux (and with other distros as well)
The sound will work on the live CD occasionally ( 1/3 of the time) but after the install it rarely works for more then two boots into linux
The verbose mode of the boot gave me this line which i think is the problem
Code: Select all
No mixer config in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state, you have to unmute your card!

however i have no clue how to fix this. I have looked at the post http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=10325 but when i got to the
Code: Select all
 ls /dev/snd/*

the output was
Code: Select all
 controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1p seq timer

none of which seem to be processes or related to any process in KDE System guard

I have tried alsaconfig and alsamixer and everything is enabled / at full volume. Sabayon obviously can use the card because when i use Kmix to mute the volume the mute indicator light changes colors.

If it is any help under Fedora 8 live i recieved a similar message on boot but when i logged in it told me that the "system could not access the card. using device null" or something along those lines.

The system is a dual boot windows vista ultimate x86_64 and Sabayon 3.4e x86_64
and the card is a hda - intel nVidia Coporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2) as stated by alsaconf

My apologies if there is an answer posted for this question elsewhere or this is a dumb question; I have searched and tried all plausible fixes for this problem.

sense you pointed me back there i'm guessing i'm missing something with the list of /dev/snd/ being processes, if you could explain what they are and how to kill em t'd be greatly appreciated. I'm somewhat new to linux and even newer to kde so sorry if i'm abit slow

well i have finished the steps in that post for all the hp / laptop modules listed and there is still no sound. Though it did remove the "no mixer config in asound.state you need to unmute your card!" on boot up. I turned to the alsa website for some answers and their guide needs a soundcore module, there doesn't appear to be one, so it looks like i need to recompile the kernel with it. I have noticed one anomaly though, when vista is in an error state (booting back up brings up safe mode / safe mode /w networking / start normally etc ) the sound works fine with sabayon in both the live cd and in the boot. I'm not entirely sure why this is but it works consistently. i'll post some more info about the system.
