Nvidia geforce 8800 GT and Sabayon

Postby mercury1982 » Tue Dec 04, 2007 9:27

My pc is this one: AMD X2 64, Geforce 8800 gt, 2 gb ddr2 800, hard disk 500 gb
I'm a beginner of Linux OS.I'm trying to install newest Sabayon 64 bit from the live cd but it absolutely doesn't work. I cannot even enter in the desktop, it freeze at the beginning. I press CTRL+f1 and the message of error is: video card nvidia corporation unknown device 0611 (rev a2) and an error regarding xsistence too.
So I think the problem is about the geforce 8800 gt. So I download the driver "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.04-pkg2.run" from the nvidia web site but I don't know if it could help me and above all how eventually using it!
How could I solve this problem?
Thanks,
Alex

Grazie,
Alex

You must switch card with older than 8800GT before installation process and then install SL until finish and the desktop work fine. In the login desktop do my following instruction
- force x-server not running with "telinit s"
- unload nvidia module "rmmod -f nvidia"
- install new driver beta 169.04 from nvidia site "sh NVIDIA ...... .run "

And change your card back, of course you must be root for that installation

thank you for the advice, i'll try as soon as possible (I have to find another card, older). I will post possible other problems.
ps and if in the meantime i try to install sabayon in text mode? Do you think i could do it considering I'm not an expert?
