Recurring screen reolution problem..

Postby farfnarf » Sun Dec 02, 2007 15:06

..I had this solved months ago when I first intalled Sabayon on this Acer Aspire laptop with the Intel 945 graphics card.

The screen resolution is supposed to be 1280x800, which I can manually cause to happen after every reboot by using 915resolution 58 1280 800 in the terminal.

Reboot causes the resolution to return to 1024x768.

I have edited xorg.conf to exclude 1024x768 and include 1280x800, but that did not help.

I also edited the 915Resolultion file in /etc/conf.d thus:

# Copyright 1999-2006 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/sys-apps/915resolution/files/confd,v 1.2 2006/07/22 17:41:50 chutzpah Exp $

# Config file for /etc/init.d/915resolution
# based on the config file included with sys-apps/855resolution

# this example will replace mode "4c" with 1280x800x24
#replace=( "4d 1280 800 24" )

# to replace more than one mode do something like this
replace=(
"4d 1280 800 24"
"58 1280 800 24"
)
#replace=( "58 1280 800 24" )

# if you want to log the output add the file here.
# this will be overwritten at every boot
log="/var/log/915resolution"

That did not help either.

Any ideas?

Hi !
I also had a bit of a problem with 3.4 mini changing resolutions on me so I used the xorg.conf version generated by nvidia-settings and here's the metamodes thinggie that did it in my case since I wanted 1024x768 @ 85 Hz by default instead of other resolutions
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Videocard0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    Option         "TwinView" "0"
    Option         "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "CRT-0"
    Option         "metamodes" "1024x768_85 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0"
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
    EndSubSection

I have not tried "metamodes." I will now that I've heard of it. Thank you! I'll post back how it works or not. :wink:

Re: Recurring screen reolution problem..[RESOLVED]

I was able to solve the problem by following the instructions at a wiki page posted in another thread on the subject: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Intel_Onbo ... Resolution

It turns out that the 24 color depth for Intel 945 cards causes the problem and it must be set to 32 if you want 1280x800 display resolution.

Also, to get 915resolution to invoke at boot it must be entered into the /boot/grub.conf file.

Finally settled!

This might be too simplistic (as I am new to Sabayon/Linux), but I had this problem with my main user account. so logged on as 'root' and changed the settings there then it maintained the resolution for my main user.

This may be some thing that can be done as a 'Superuser' do but as I said I am newish......

I dont like the look of the other answers.....a bit scarry for me at the mo.

BTW this is THE BEST Distro I have tried.... picked up all my hardware without involving installing one additional driver, which is a first.
Been trying to run Linux on my main box since I bought Mandrake 7 many moons ago.
