Forum sticky suggestion - hardware that works.

Postby Richlion » Thu Nov 15, 2007 21:49

Hi All,

is it possible for us to have a sticky on the forum with a list of hardware Sabayon works with? What I mean is everyone willing to contribute would post a list of her/his HW components that Sabayon works with. For those planning to install this distro it would be an indication they can be sure most things would work.

What I see on many forums are usually tons of HW related problems.

For those looking to buy a new computer, mother board, processor, graphical card it would be a big help. For example the 3D acceleration - on my Toshiba laptop this is not an option for me, maybe after a full install. So next time I would buy a computer I could look for the best graphical card - for example.

We could add HW components, like cameras, SD cards, web cams, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Richard.

Sabayon 3.4E 86x64 (beagle removed) running KDE and without swap.

Dell Dimension E521 (onboard sound turned off at BIOS)
AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+ processor
2 GB RAM 533Mhz DDR2
Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE 256MB
250GB SATA HD (Many partitions - quad booting with Sabayon, XP and 2 other Linux)
PCI Trust SC-5200 5.1 sound card
PCI V-Stream DVB-t DVBTV card
TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H553A
Advent Optical Wireless Keyboard and Mouse USB (ADE-WD1)
HP Deskjet F380 (printer and scanner both work)
Broadcom BCM 4401-BO 100BASE-TX
(all above - out of the box) (I'd already turned off the onboard sound and fitted the PCI card)

Logitech Pro 3000 Webcam - only basic functions
USB Media reader - only tested with SD card
All USB flash memory devices that I have (Disgo, My Flash, etc. )
Polaroid PDC 3030 camera
Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra
(all above needed a bit of extra work)

Compiz Fusion works well on the above, some visualizations on Amarok don't work or crash at full screen. I can't comment on games as I don't play any of the graphics intensive ones. Everything else works well

The only piece of hardware I can't use at present is a new Creative Zen 8GB MP3 player. I'm sure software will be available eventually :)

I have tried the following built-in devices so far:
- Gigabit Ethernet works
- Bluetooth works (front switch on/off detected correctly)
- Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG works -- excellent reception, I have used both unencrypted and WPA Personal -- (front switch on/off detected correctly)
- USB ports work (also if I plug in devices via USB hubs)
- Webcam works
- Programmable push-button for web browser works (configurable via K Menu > Control Centre)
- Programmable push-button for e-mail client works (configurable via K Menu > Control Centre)
- So far have not been able to get the other two programmable push-buttons to work
- Memory card reader works (have only tried with an Olympus xD-Picture card so far)
- ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256 Mb dedicated GDDR3 VRAM works with XGL (perfectly) and now AIGLX (I've recently tried the new ATI driver with AIGLX and Compiz Fusion and it is very smooth (better than XGL): the only problem with AIGLX & Compiz Fusion is that videos flicker: work-around is to switch temporarily to Metacity or Kwin to watch videos until ATI and Compiz Fusion update their software to work completely with AIGLX -- or you stick with XGL for the time being, of course).
- Video out works (I've only tried the analogue VGA socket so far).
- Keyboard works well. Many of the blue function keys on the keyboard work out-of-the-box, the rest can be configured via xmodmap (see another thread for what I did) although recent emerges I have done have stopped Fn-up_arrow raising volume above 11% and I have not had a chance yet to investigate further.
- Touchpad works, left and right touchpad buttons and central rocker switch for scrolling work
- Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio works (recording, and playback via headphone socket -- I have not tried analogue or digital Line Out)
- 160GB S-ATA-150 HDD 5400 RPM works
- Power control works (K Menu > Control Centre > Power Control > Laptop Battery)

It's a SL-friendly laptop!

SL 3.26, 3.3 and 3.4 Loop 2b were rock solid from the word "go", even if I started emerging packages without optimising make.conf. SL 3.4f is easy to break immediately after installation if I start emerging packages without first setting up make.conf properly. So the first thing after installing is to head over to make.conf. Once I figured that out, 3.4f is a kitten.

External stuff I use that works with SL:
- Microsoft USB Mouse 3000
- Epson Stylus Photo 950
- HP psc 2110 (via LAN/Samba)
- Canon MP510 (via LAN/Samba)
- 2x Trust 14591 4-port USB 2 hubs
- Acer AL1916W 19" monitor (1440 x 900)
- iRiver iHP-140 mp3 player (works nicely with Amarok)
- Iomega external portable USB HDD 40 Gb
- Seagate external USB HDD 230 Gb
- HP ScanJet 3400C

Hi Fitzcarraldo,
quite impressive list of things that work.
What kind of camera do you have and what software do you use?
I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 that comes with some good Win software, you can even create nice movies. Although compression codecs are not a good option for this one.

I am also wondering if there is a list of hardware, especially graphic cards that Sabayon/Gentoo can use? Is there anyway we can check this?

I found a shop that sells computers without operating system. It has a good ratings, the first one I just found is not very expensive:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... ml?PC-1102

My HW:

One thing I tried today is my built in laptop SD card reader. Sabayon does not see the card. I am not sure this kind of device should recognized.
It doesn't work on Mandriva either. Because of that I purchased a 14 in 1 card reader that works with USB.

Regards,
Richard.

It's a built-in Acer OrbiCam 1.3 megapixel CMOS Webcam (manufactured by Logitech). I've used it with aMSN so far. When I get around to it, I'll update Skype for Linux to the recently-released 2.0 Beta (*finally* Skype for Linux supports video) to see if it works.

Regarding video cards, there's a thread listing video cards that do and don't work with Compiz Fusion in the 3D Desktops and Window Managers area of the forum. Compiz Fusion is the benchmark.

I know someone who used to have a Novatech PC several years ago, but that had a VIA chipset, not the one you're looking at. Anyway, the build quality was reasonable although I remember him having to buy and fit a patch cable to connect the motherboard's USB pins to the USB socket in the PC's case (why this connection was not provided by Novatech, I don't know -- perhaps a mistake by Novatech).

Sometimes has issues with wifi + wpa / wep in some versions otherwise works fine by default.

Or

Example:
gigabyte abcd2345 motherboards works with All versions of SL but has issues with SL9.99 something boot related crashes it.
Nvidia 13876 ultra dual sli quad cards has chicken pocks in SL versions 8.73 and needs driver 302.34 from nvidia to make it work and not 302.32 as comes with the SL version.

Thanks for the help as the new users would benefit greatly from this and or can then contact the person with the same hardware to find a possible fix for their bug.

Thanks WOLF I missed that one , merged the 2 for easier access.

The video cards should likely be listed in the " viewtopic.php?f=53&t=8773 " as well if working. Some of them might need the kicker tweak.

Now we need a few motherboards intel p35 x38 m33 and nvidia based ones that gamers could use as well.

Code: Select all
*Wifi network cards here is a list + how-to link*

Complete linux wifi card + driver  list:
http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_alles.php?

Alternative drivers for Wifi cards:
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/

Lets keep this thing growing , can later merge all the info into excel type spreadsheet or something easier like the wifi card list.
