Fitzcarraldo wrote:If you're worried about installing anything using Portage, then don't try what I suggested. If you are curious and want to learn something (i.e. how Gentoo works and how SL uses Gentoo), you could install SL in VirtualBox and try it in that instead. It's entirely up to you.

I don't fear, more, I would like to understand, what I do, before I do. I am eager to learn, sure. So I will make a complete backup in the next days and then try your second way. However, thank you, Fitz

linuxfluesterer,

The "a" in the command "emerge -1av kio-mtp" is short for "--ask", so you would be able to see what the command wants to merge, and, should you want to, back out if it lists more than kio-mtp. Another option worth knowing is "p", short for "--pretend" (use the command "man emerge" to read the manual on the emerge command). So the command "emerge -1pv kio-mtp" will tell you what package(s) would be pulled in if you were to go ahead and merge the package.

In VirtualBox on the family PC in my lounge where I am typing this now, I sometimes have to repeat once or twice the commands to synch with repositories (Entropy or Portage) due to the command not being able to connect to a repository. (I should get around to checking the MTU, as on my previous family PC it needed to be reduced). My ISP has also been having trouble in the last few days (as mentioned in the national newspapers here), so that does not help. Anyway, if you get an error message when trying to sync or install something (an error message along the lines of "rsync timeout", or "RemoteDB.cache(); Failed to update the overlay list from: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/overlays/repositories.xml", or whatever), don't panic just repeat the command.

Just to prove that what I have told you will work, I have just done it in a new SL installation in VirtualBox:

Code: Select all
sabayon fitzcarraldo # equo search kio-mtp
╠  @@ Searching...

I did have some fun and games getting there, though, due to some things missing in the SL installation. Just so you understand how I went about it, I'll talk you through what I did.

BTW, when you issue the "emerge --sync" command, it may tell you that a new version of sys-apps/portage is available and recommend that you install it. DON'T! That message is for users who do not have Entropy installed (or who never use Entropy). SL is built using a specific version of sys-apps/portage, so stick with the version that SL installed.

First I set up the Portage overlay and package masking/unmasking:

Code: Select all
# echo "*/*::kde" >> /etc/portage/package.mask/00-sabayon.package.mask
# echo "kde-misc/kio-mtp" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask/00-sabayon.package.unmask
# echo "=kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999 **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords/00-sabayon.package.keywords

Then I tried to sync the Portage database and ebuilds for the main Portage tree and kde overlay:

Code: Select all
# emerge --sync && layman -S && layman -a kde

(The "-a" option in the layman command is short for "--add", so it only needs to be done to add the Portage kde overlay for the first time. After that, the overlay sync command "layman -S" would suffice.)
Due to my Internet problems in VirtualBox on this machine I had to repeat the above three times to get a connection to the repositories. Once the above command ran through to completion successfully, I issued the command "emerge -1av kio-mtp" but saw the following:

Code: Select all
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

[ebuild  N    #] kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999:4::kde  USE="(-aqua) -debug" 0 kB

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- www-plugins/adobe-flash-11.2.202.359::gentoo (masked by: AdobeFlash-11.x license(s))
A copy of the 'AdobeFlash-11.x' license is located at '/usr/portage/licenses/AdobeFlash-11.x'.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

So I just used the following commands to find out if those first two packages were really not installed (they were not) and installed them via Entropy:

Code: Select all
# equo search cmake
# equo install cmake
# equo search automoc
# equo install automoc

Then I issued the command "emerge -1av kio-mtp" again and saw the following error message in the output from Portage:

Code: Select all
 * ERROR: kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999::kde failed (setup phase):
 *   Sorry, but gcc-4.3 and earlier wont work for KDE (see bug 354837).

So I checked whether the gcc (GNU C Compiler) was installed and selected in SL:

Code: Select all
# gcc-config -l

 [2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.7.3-hardenednopie

 [4] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.7.3-hardenednossp
 [5] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.7.3-vanilla
# equo search gcc

Well, it was selected, but not installed, so I installed it via Entropy:

Code: Select all
# equo install gcc
# gcc-config -l # Just to check the correct version is selected.

Then I tried the "emerge -1av kio-mtp" command again, but it could not download the package from the repository:

Code: Select all
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999 from kde
>>> Unpacking source...

 * ERROR: kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999::kde failed (unpack phase):
 *   Unable to fetch from any of EGIT_REPO_URI

Well, the above error message told me that my VirtualBox installation could not connect to the repository, so I repeated the command a couple of times and it then managed to connect to the kde repository and download the kio-mtp package, compile and install it.

Of course, as I did that via Portage, Entropy did not know about it, so the command "equo search kio-mtp" returned:

Code: Select all
sabayon fitzcarraldo # equo search kio-mtp
╠  @@ Searching...

So I told Entropy what I had done via Portage:

I did not add those other packages! They are cruft from SL. I just ignored them. But notice the all-important "kde-misc/kio-mtp-9999". And, of course, now the command "equo search kio-mtp" returns:

But what if I had just installed the latest version of kio-mtp from the main Portage tree, instead of the live version (9999) from the Portage kde overlay? So I uninstalled kio-mtp-9999 and installed the latest version from the main tree, just to see whether it would also be installable. While I was at it, I installed the excellent Portage utility eix to give me detailed information about the packages I was interested in.

First I uninstall kio-mtp-9999:

This time the installation was able to download the tarball from a Portage main tree repository, compile and install the package.

So I checked it is installed. This time I used Entropy, just for the heck of it:

Code: Select all
sabayon fitzcarraldo # equo search kio-mtp
╠  @@ Searching...
╠   Keywords:  kio-mtp
╠   Found:     0 entries

Entropy does not know it was installed via Portage until I tell Entropy, so I did that now:

Code: Select all
sabayon fitzcarraldo # equo rescue spmsync
╠  @@ These packages were added:
╠     # kde-misc/kio-mtp-0.75_p20131020
╠  +++  (1/1) kde-misc/kio-mtp-0.75_p20131020
╠  @@ Update complete

Then I asked Entropy again:

Code: Select all
sabayon fitzcarraldo # equo search kio-mtp
╠  @@ Searching...
╠      @@ Package: kde-misc/kio-mtp-0.75_p20131020 branch: 5, [__system__]
╠          Installed:     version: 0.75_p20131020 ~ tag: NoTag ~ revision: 9999
╠          Slot:          4
╠          Homepage:      https://projects.kde.org/projects/playground/base/kio-mtp
╠          Description:   MTP KIO-Client for KDE
╠          License:       GPL-2+
╠   Keywords:  kio-mtp
╠   Found:     1 entry
sabayon fitzcarraldo #

And there you go! As you can see, this time I had installed kio-mtp-0.75_p20131020 from the Portage main tree instead of kio-mtp-9999 from the Portage kde overlay.

VirtualBox is a good tool for trying things out first. And you can also take snapshots in VirtualBox and roll back if you break the SL installation in VirtualBox.

heathen wrote:Sidenote: Some pluggins still aren't working, like the multimedia controller and mouse controller, but apparently a new version just came out (0.7) yesterday and it's not available in the main or weekly repo's yet. So the version on the computer is older (0.5.2.1) and the one on the phone is the newest one. There's a .tar available on the authors blog, but I think I'll wait until a more stable version is available in the weekly repo.

Hopefully Fitz will see this. The new version upgrade showed up on entropy a while ago and so far everything else is working now except one: the Filesystem Expose pluggin. Yes, I've checked to make sure it's enabled, and it is. All I can figure is there must be some security feature on my phone that I'm passing over. I have Lookout, and I'm wondering if that could be blocking it some how? Not sure how to fix it.

Also, the phone doesn't show up at all in Krusader, only Dolphin.. don't know if that's related or not.

Really, try 'KDE Connect', suggested by Fitzcarraldo. It doesn't use the way into (external) Internet. It works in the same network, where you have your phone and your computer. There is the latest version already. It's fast, faster than Airdroid, key secured and a inhouse solution. I really love to use it. In one task, I can transfer up to 500 files, e.g. photos. Thanks again to you, Fitz.

TTIP is NOT YET stopped. Especially consider NHS and ISDS topics. Talk to your local politician to open eyes for danger to democracy because of TTIP
