Can't recompile video-intel w/o downgrading Xorg [Solved]

Postby ElDuderino » Sat Aug 17, 2013 22:24

Hi,

I have Ati/Intel Hybrid graphics and use fglrx. Works fine if I recompile the Intel driver (xf86-video-intel) with USE="uxa -sna" (uxa is disabled in the sabayon package).

Now, current sabayonlinux.org repo contains intel driver 2.21.14 and Xorg-server 1.14. When I upgrade to that version, I have to recompile the intel driver, but if I try, emerge wants to DOWNGRADE the Xorg-server to 1.13.4, even though in sabayon, 2.21.14 works fine with 1.14. It also wants to pull in some other packages and strangely wants to upgrade wine to 1.7.0.

There seems to be some discrepancy: why does the Intel driver from Sabayon repo work with Xorg 1.14, but from Portage, it doesn't accept it? I'm on sabayon-weekly now and not upgrading at all at the moment, because I cannot recompile the intel driver without creating a mess ...

Any help?

Another strange observation: if I run "emerge -p =xorg-server-1.14.2 =xf86-video-intel-2.21.14", it tells me it would do it just fine (I have still xorg-server-1.13.4-r1 and xf86-video-intel-2.21.13, basically last weeks "weekly" repo), but if I tried it in a virtual box that has both the latest sabayonlinux.org/limbo packages and most recent portage tree, it still wants to downgrade xorg-server.

I'm afraid of upgrading my system to xorg-server-1.14.2 and giving it a shot, because I would have no way of returning to the working state I have right now.

Can anyone please help me?

Here is my output (I switched back to plain Intel setup in the meantime, so I can stay in sync with Sabayon, which also means I'm not using my ATI, at all):

uhu2 ~ # emerge -pv =xf86-video-intel-2.21.14

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

you mixed Portage ands Entropy? If yes, eremembered to edit the client.conf file prior?

Try this install the newer xorg-server with entropy and --nodeps option:

Code: Select all
# equo i xorg-server --nodeps

Tne try re-emerge the driver that you want, your use flags, etc... but with option --nodeps, in order to not change other packages....

remember also that if you have an ATI onboard , the xorg-server have xorg-driver as deps,

instead, it is know that the new ATIs works better without xorg-drivers, only xorg-server installed...

Caution in the control of the deps....

Example, i consider this, you post, without -p option, dangerous, change all: udev, evdev etc... several hardware related packages, in only one installation, changed, may be dangerous fot the hardware recognition:

ebuild r UD ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.4-r1:0/1.13.4::sabayon-distro [1.14.2:0/1.14.2::sabayon-distro] USE="kdrive nptl suid udev xorg xvfb -dmx -doc -ipv6 -minimal (-selinux) -static-libs -tslib -xnest" 5,378 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.8.1 361 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-fbdev-0.4.3-r1 283 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa-2.3.2-r1 292 kB
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.21.14::sabayon-distro USE="dri udev uxa* xvmc -glamor -sna*" 1,929 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-vmmouse-13.0.0 307 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-wacom-0.20.0 USE="-debug" 526 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics-1.7.1 432 kB
[ebuild rR ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.2.0::sabayon-distro USE="udev -glamor" 806 kB

Of course, why didn't I think of --nodeps? I got confused by the fact that portage wants to downgrade, but it's probably because 1.14 is masked/keyworded in portage. Now it works, thanks!

i had in mind the use of the --nodeps also in portage, in your case, because i undestood that portage, will try to "work" on changes of udev, evdev etc... These are important packages for the systerm find and control hardware... many of them, changed together, may be a source of problems.

In my other post, solved, is true, was the kernel, thanks.
