you dont need vi

open terminal
su
enter root password

nano /etc/make.conf
controls for nano are at the bottom of screen

or if you need a gui

open terminal or hit alt F2 and enter
kdesu konqueror
enter root password

you are now root file manager and can edit it with text editor like kwrite

thanks wolfden, i got the file modified,
still cant emerge as follows:

localhost sabayonuser # emerge thunderbird
Calculating dependencies \
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "thunderbird".

i will go back this weekend and look through the forums.

you need to look into the wiki and read the portage guide

It's working but you are not using the proper names, learn to search for the actual name. You can't emerge packages if you got the name wrong

emerge -s thunderbird
