Comments on Portato 0.10

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Tue Apr 22, 2008 0:47

Hi there Necoro. I'll add any comments on version 0.10 of Portato to this thread.

Here are my first observations. These are all constructive comments and are not to be taken as criticism. The points mentioned below are not show-stoppers, but I think the changes I suggest would make the application more user-friendly and more professional-looking. The specific packages mentioned below are just examples, i.e. the comments pertain to any package.

1. I merged taglib to upgrade from taglib-1.4-r1 to taglib-1.5 but the green 'LED' next to 1.4-r1 in the Versions column stayed against 1.4-r1 even though the merge had completed successfully and version 1.5 is now installed instead of version 1.4-r1. This is somewhat confusing and I recommend that Portato automatically moves the green 'LED' to the version that has just been installed.

2. I merged kid3-0.10 (previously, no version of the package was installed on my PC). The merge was successful but no green 'LED' appeared next to 0.10 in the Versions column to indicate that the package had been installed. I recommend that Portato automatically displays a green 'LED' against the version of a package that has just been installed.

3. Immediately following the merge described under item 2 above, I clicked on the Category "ALL". In the Packages column "kid3" was no longer highlighted, although in the Versions column "0.10" was still highlighted and the descriptions box in the bottom left hand corner of the Portato window still pertained to media-sound/kid3. I suggest either of the following changes to the functionality:
a) the package should remain highlighted in the Packages column in such cases, until the user selects a different package;
or, alternatively,
b) if "ALL" is selected in the Category column and no package is shown as selected in the Packages column then the Version column should be empty and so should the descriptions box in the lower left hand corner of the Portato window.

Thanks for your comments :)

Yes - you are right for all of them. I'll see what I can do for them. Actually the overall list handling etc. in Portato is rather complicated. But nevertheless I hope I can implement this.

If you want to do me a favor: Create one (or more) issues at portato's issue tracker:
http://portato.origo.ethz.ch/issues - this makes it easier for me to keep them in mind. (Unfortunatly you'll have to create an account :| )

Hi Necoro,

I successfully completed merging the latest version of a package (from coreutils-6.10-r1 to coreutils-6.11) and then clicked on ALL in the Categories column. I then slowly started clicking on those packages in the Packages column with a green 'LED' beside them, to see if any had newer versions. When I clicked on the Packages column header the column became all white and a bug message window popped up:

during the execution of this program.

It probably isn't fatal, but should be reported
to the developers nonetheless.

Hi Necoro,
A couple more problems to report:

1. I tried to merge the latest version of accel-manager (1.4.4). Whilst the merge was in progress I moved the cursor outside the Portato window and Portato crashed. No error windows popped up.

EDIT: I've just merged Dillo and moved the mouse cursor outside the Portato window and this time Portato did not crash, so perhaps it was purely a coincidence that Portato crashed when I moved the mouse outside the window during the previous merge.

2. I then re-launched Portato and again selected accel-manager-1.4.4 for merging and executed the merge. This time I did not move the mouse and the merge completed successfully. However, as mentioned in my first post, the green 'LED' didn't move to the merged version 1.4.4 in the Versions column so, in order to try and refresh the Versions column manually, I selected another package -- and the versions of that package were displayed in the Versions column -- and then I reselected accel-manager in the Packages column. But the green 'LED' stayed against the earlier version of accel-manager, even though eix confirmed that 1.4.4 was now installed. I then clicked on a few other packages and back to accel-manager to see if the green 'LED' would move, but a bug message window popped up with the following message:

Thanks for pointing these things out :)

Regarding the first post: This was a small bug: Fixed now in bzr...

Regarding the second - point one: Sounds strange with the crash. I hope this really was just coincidence...

Point two: Hmm - the not moving version "LED". Is this the only package where this happens or did you see it also elsewhere?
And the exception: This exception happens, if you click on a package which though it has a directory in the tree does not have ebuilds in it. Can you see if this is really the case for the package, where the error happened?

In answer to your question about the not-moving version 'LED', Necoro, so far I've only merged the five packages I mentioned in my previous posts in this thread, and this is the first time I have noticed this particular problem occurring. The previous version of accel-manager (I think it was 1.4.1) that was installed on my PC prior to my merging version 1.4.4 is no longer in the SL overlay.

I've got another couple of problems, I'm afraid.

The first of these happens after I have launched Portato a few times. Let's say very roughly on the fifth launch. After I type in the root password as prompted, the little Portato splash screen appears but then disappears quickly, and Portato crashes without any message window appearing. I have tried running Portato from the command line to see what messages are displayed and, when it crashes this way a very large amount of text appears in the Terminal window -- so much that the command I entered to run Portato is not in the scrollable Konsole window anymore. Here's the very last bit of text at the bottom of the Terminal window from one of these crashes, in case it gives you a clue what's happening:

Also, on one occasion when I launched Portato from a Terminal window to investigate the above problem, Portato launched OK but, as soon as I moved the mouse over 'File' so that I could select 'Quit' from the pull-down menu, Portato crashed. (I had not clicked on File, though).

Do you think these crashes, and the crash I mentioned in an earlier post, could be related?

EDIT: Try to first recompile "libglade" - I guess this is the problem ;)

Try to recompile some libs:
Code: Select all
emerge -1av glib gtk+ python pygobject pygtk vte

You might also try to include debug information:
Code: Select all
FEATURES="nostrip" CFLAGS="-O0 -ggdb -pipe -march=prescott" emerge -1av ...

(of course replace "prescott" by your architecture)

Then you can do ulimit -c 10000000 in your shell prior launching portato from that shell. When it crashes, it'll create a core. You than can do gdb python $CORE (whereby $CORE is the name of the created core (in most cases "core" or "core.$PID")). When gdb is finished with loading, you can type bt, which will print you a backtrace. You might want to post the top of this. Then I can try to find out, what went wrong (though I can't guarantee anything)

Hi Necoro,

I had a brief chance a couple of days ago to look again at the crashing problem (although I cannot merge packages where I'm staying this week). I recompiled libglade as you suggested but it did not solve the problem. The first time I launched Portato from Konsole. I then moved the mouse cursor and, as soon as it reached the top boundary of the window (as far as I could tell), Portato crashed. However the next couple of times I launched Portato it did not crash. The text displayed in the Terminal window when Portato crashed was less than before I recompiled libglade; the entire text is given below in case it is of use:

Any ideas from this latest text? Thanks in advance.

I may be able to try your other suggests this coming weekend when I'm back at home.

Re: Comments on Portato 0.10

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Sat May 10, 2008 14:50

OK, as re-merging libglade did not stop the crashes, I have now had a chance to try your second suggestion (emerge -1av glib gtk+ python pygobject pygtk vte) and so far have not had a crash. However, I'm reluctant to use Portato further until I can find out how to enable the --oneshot option, as I don't want all the packages I merge going into my world file. I cannot see how to enable the --oneshot option in Portato. I've looked in File > Preferences and cannot see it there, and cannot see it in any of the tabbed windows either. Would you kindly tell me how to enable --oneshot? Thanks.
