you only have one kernel in eselect kernel list - it can't compile wrong

no you don't understand, the problem is that the kernel in eselect is the wrong one, it's the 2.6.23 that I compiled but doesn't work, so I'm using the 2.6.22 and I want to compile for the 2.6.22.

Of course you do, you haven't rebuilt and installed the 6.22 kernel again. If eselect only shows one kernel, then you only have that kernel installed. Or maybe your symlinks are all wacky.

Also previously, the 6.23 kernel is working, it boots. You are running into a video driver/kde configuration/build error. Not a kernel error.

Did you try logging in via command line and running a modules-rebuild to see if that solved your kdm login headaches?
