question about kernel updating

Post by PAdu92 » Tue Dec 04, 2007 17:44

I would like to upgrade my kernel to the 2.6.23 on my Sabayon Mini 3.4 but i'm scared of loosing everything:
First question, in the wiki I see that there is an option for LVM, I don't use LVM but my / is on a software RAID0 by mdadm, is there an option for that?
2nd question, last time I tried to upgrade my kernel, my mouse worked but not the keyboard, what should I do for that?

You will want to add --mdadm to the genkernel command. A simple `genkernel --help` would of provided you with this information.

Theres no risk of losing everything, its just a kernel. If you execute the command like the wiki says to, your old kernel will still be there, and listed in the grub menu, so if your new kernel fails for some reason, you have something to fall back on. Even if you don't have a fallback kernel, you can always chroot in from a livecd and make a new kernel.

thanks, but I just tried again, this time, it worked, (even without the -mdadm) but when it boots I see the nvidia logo, but kdm doesnt start, I can just see the mouse. Also when I did module-rebuild rebuild a lot of them didn't compile:
=media-libs/svgalib-1.9.25
net-dialup/slmodem-2.9.11_pre20061021-r2
net-wireless/madwifi-ng-0.9.4
app-crypt/truecrypt-4.3
these did not compile

I also get an error before Sabayon loads about a bios bug and MMCONFIG not starting up...

I don't know about that bios bug, more information would be required to figure that out.

I would need to see the error output to know what the problem with kdm. Check in /var/log.

Are you sure about that? Which logs did you read?

kdm.log and xorg.log, the last entry dates of september 20th
but I don't know if its really kdm that doesn't work or else, because all I see is a black screen with the cursor (cursor loading) and I can move the cursor

is there a way to remove all that I have done? Because I don't really care using the 2.6.22 kernel, but the thing is that like I said in another post (http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewt ... 54&t=11641) I couldnt install some softwares because the sources were not included in the mini edition, so if I just remove the 2.6.23, I will probably get problemes because I recompiled for exemple the nvidia drivers for the 2.6.23 kernel, I could'nt do that with the 2.6.22.
Do you understant my problem? sorry, english is not my original language....

Uh yeah, just select the 2.6.22 kernel from the grub menu at boot.
