Emerging archived drivers from nVidia [Solved]

Postby 2ny » Mon Nov 26, 2007 13:51

Please - I am going to need the 1.0-7185 driver for my Geforce 4 Go 440 card, I can just download it, but I would prefer using Portage:

emerge -s nvidia-drivers

doesn't list this version, is there an alternative key-word?

try:

Code: Select all
emerge =nvidia-drivers-71.86.01-r10

This version is in the sabayon overlay.

Thanks-a-bunch, both of you!

Yes, eix works fine. Never heard of that one before - now, (sorry. . .) how do I install from there?

eix is more of a (400% faster) search tool.
Install using emerge.

Remember you need to run update-eix before using it.

You will probably need to add that package to your /etc/portage/packages.unmask. The formatting would probably look like:
Code: Select all
=nvidia-drivers-71.86.01-r10

You may also need to add a line to your /etc/portage/packages.keyword since that package is probably ~x86.

On a separate note, I have a GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x, and I could have sworn that I read that the 7xxx nvidia drivers would not work with this vintage of nVidia card. I am currently using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.01 for my card, and it seems to be working well.

Sorry, folks! I wasn't expressing myself clearly - I emerged eix as instructed. I then downloaded the *pkg2.run and I will compile it tomorrow.

One question:
will I have to manually uninstall the present driver? Or will the script handle everything? It's been a while now since up till now the standard driver has not presented any trouble of that sort.

I realize I didn't tell you what I was about to do - I'm installing 3.4f and the supplied driver isn't giving me any acceleration! I've tried updating and end up with a white screen or alternatively in a terminal! This driver from the archive used to work so I'm positive for now. Thanks all!!!

Oh-oh! well, I ran the commands from your first post but I must have thought eix was somehow involved in the installation - I have it installed now, I am about to go through the last bit of instructions - running depmod, does that require any parameters? the rest I have tried before.

Thanks for holding me back!
