Packages not compiling with emerge and layman issue

hi all iv run into two problems lately

1. python-gnome & gnome-python-desktop would not compile with emerge they would come up with errors. but manually with the source code ./configure,make and make install worked with both packages?
2.layman does not list any overlays. and says there is no sabayon overly available. iv already tried reinstalling layman and Layman -L

have you done layman -a sabayon

Maybe do a layman -d sabayon then layman -a sabayon

I bet the python errors are due to masked packages and/or dependencies. You should heed wolfden's advice and decipher what portage is telling you. Any chance you can post the error messages from portage?

i allready deleted sabayon overlay and layman -a sabayon does not work
* Overlay "sabayon" does not exist!

Looks like you're running python 2.5, have you ran

since upgrading python?

If not that's probably why things have started breaking on you.
