2 packages blocking each other

Postby new_matt_jam » Sun Oct 28, 2007 20:08

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-openchrome-9999 USE="dri -debug" 0 kB [1]
[blocks B ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-via (is blocking x11-drivers/xf86-video-openchrome-9999)

How can I solve this problem, I cannot possible install the both
x11-drivers/xf86-video-openchrome and x11-drivers/xf86-video-openchrome-9999.
I have uninstalled x11-drivers/xf86-video-via in order to have the other package installed.
But it doest solve the problem because I realised that I cannot install both packages on the system.
Thanks

Isn't openChrome a replacement for the the VIA driver? You don't need them both, do you? What VIA graphics card do you have?

LOL.

new_matt_jam. have a look at the sticky threads in the SL forum. One of them, written by wolfden, is about the /etc/make.conf file. In that file there are various flags for different models of graphics cards and input devices, amongst other things. You need to remove the flags for hardware that you don't have otherwise you could get conflicts like the one you're seeing when you emerge (compile) packages. If you look in the SL Wiki, and in the Gentoo Handbook on the Gentoo Web site, there's some articles about USE flags etc. The USE flags in /etc/make.conf are called 'global' USE flags because they can affect many/any package. There is another file (/etc/portage/package.use) which has 'local USE flags' which act on specific packages. The Portage Handbook on the Web and the various other resources mentioned give a reasonable introduction into these files.

Yes I have heard about /etc/make.conf and /usr/portage/package.use but my problem is how to edit these files. In regard of the make.conf , please can you tell me a short cut to edit this file ?
Thanks
