It's hard to stay out of this thread, but I am trying

first we don't use beryl

second we don't use gentoo-sources

third try using 4.2.2.2 in your /etc/resolv.conf

emerge -s gentoo-sources

why to do that!? is a joke?

you tell to us that you can browse, can reach the net not so? then , to be sure is not a internet connecţion problem do a manually package download, like a

Code: Select all
curl -O "http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/genpatches-2.6.23-1.extras.tar.bz2"

or

Code: Select all
wget "http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/genpatches-2.6.23-1.extras.tar.bz2"

if is working, then emerge part should work also ... if not, but you can browse the web, can be a proxy restricţion to download some type of files like, *.bz2, *.exe, *.rar, etc... etc ...

this is the relevant part:

Code: Select all
Connecting to distro.ibiblio.org|127.255.102.184|:80... failed: Connection refused.

why, and who? maybe distro.ibiblio.org don't like you public ip, is banned from some reason .. try another mirror ...

It's in the first part of package management in the Sabayon Wiki. I've always done it as the first thing after a fresh install and before emerge --sync. If it is wrong then the Wiki should be amended.

wolden

let me back up.. thank you so much for getting involved.

I am confused because the beryl website seems to indicate that beryl is distributed w/sabayon.

I have never used the 3d destops and I am anxious to start. What do you suggest and how do I do it?

Ohh by the way.. thank you everybody especially wolfden.. emerge works great now, I had to disable my network manager and configure static with dns :cyclops: . I want to try beryl, but if that is not the route to go for 3d desktops, please let me know.

hummm ... if is true, then should be explained more for what is used that emerge -s gentoo-sources

and, when you suspect that emerge has a problem, why try to use it again to test internet connection!? you should use other way to test that you internet connection is ok, that you can download *.tar.bz2 and *.tar.gz files without restricţions, etc .. etc .. not so?

that command is used exactly to test emerge & internet part ... to check if is working ... if is not working ... why use it again and again !?

and i see that emerge part is now working ... congratulations ...
