Virtual keyboard in German under Plasma DE [Solved]

Post by linuxfluesterer » Tue Jun 19, 2018 20:43

Hallo guys.
Simple question: Is it possible to install / use a virtual keyboard within Plasma Desktop (not meant while login!) such like kvkbd but with a German keyboard layout (with Umlauts)?
I need for someone, who is handicapped to use a real keyboard.

Thank you in advance.

Is you talking about the virtual keyboard that appears prior the SDDM,prior the login screen?

If is this, this is called "qtvirtualkeyboard" and is controlled by the file /etc/sddm.conf, in the line "InputMethod=".

At the level of my knownledge, it have only English and the default languages, because in it, the language is compiled internal of the package.

I mean a virtual keyboard with German layout which can be used when already logged into Plasma Desktop, after entering the password to using the apps like firefox, libreoffice and so on.
I already saw kvkbd when I tried with Q4 Os which is a Plasma also, a very tiny distribution for less disk space.
But here, I could not add another keyboard layout than US.

btw. If it would not be possible to use such a virtual keyboard in native layout, it would be a big lack in Plasma and hard to explaining handicapped people, why they should no more Windows

This is my:

Code: Select all

localectl
   System Locale: LANG=de_DE.utf8
       VC Keymap: de-latin1-nodeadkeys
      X11 Layout: de
     X11 Variant: nodeadkeys
...and there is no kvkbd in the Sabayon Plasma repo nor built in my Plasma 5.12.5, so that I could test it out here.
At any rate, Sabayonino, thank you for very quick reply!

Does VirtualConsole (VC) support the "de-latin1-nodeadkeys" charset ? Try different charset (like a simple de charset )

Is already installed.
How to open it within Plasma itself, when working with Kate, firefox, not while login procedure?

I guess qtvirtualkeyboard really only works on Wayland, from what I've read. My bad.

Try xkbd and xvkbd to see if they can be configured for German layout. Both are in the Entropy package repository.
