Brightness control Dell Inspiron 15 5547 [Solved]

Postby mhzuchini » Wed Aug 13, 2014 20:58

Hello everybody.

Just this: fresh Sabayon 14.07 GNOME install on a Dell Inspiron 15 5547 does not work!
The virtual keys shows the brightness increasing or decreasing, but nothing really occurs.

I have already done a full upgrade online, but it still doesn't work.

Does anybody have a similar problem?

Thanks in advance.

OK, seems that Ubuntu does have same problem in Dell Inspiron 5547.
Check it on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1332379

I can confirm that passing "video.use_native_backlight=1" to GRUB on boot DOES work.
Brightness control operates normally after that.

But I think that should be solved in other way.
So, waiting for some help.

Re: [partially solved] Brightness control Dell Inspiron 15 5

To those who wants to (partially) solve this issue, it is necessary to configure your GRUB files.
The necessary steps are:

  1. Configure your /etc/default/grub file in order to pass the correct argument to your GRUB environment (references on http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Config_Variables):
    Code: Select all
    sudo nano /etc/default/grub
    Password: ***

then search for the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable and add the following lines:
    Code: Select all
    # adding "video.use_native_backlight=1" to solve backlight problem
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video.use_native_backlight=1"

  2. Now it's time to regenerate the grub.cfg file. Run
    Code: Select all
    sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    to do this.

Now you can try a reboot and check out if the backlight control is alive.

No need for this anymore, actual Sabayon release had corrected this issue.
