KDE 5?

Postby msdobrescu » Wed Aug 13, 2014 7:04

Hi,

I know KDE 5 is new, probably unstable, it needs time to migrate to it etc., but I can't help myself...
When do you plan to move to KDE 5?
Are there some themes similar to KDE 4? The demos on KDE site look as a copy of Windows, flat and ugly - IMHO...
Will we get a smooth upgrade, without needing to re-build all the panels and stuff?

Regards,
Mike

I guess you meant to ask when Plasma 5 desktop (developed by the KDE community) gets pushed into Entropy?

AFAIK it isn't even available in Gentoo Portage yet.

The visual overhaul isn't complete. All of the features also aren't all in KDE 5 yet.

The vast majority of users should wait until at least KDE 5.1. Jumping on board too early and then complaining that things don't work right/look right doesn't do anybody any good.

No, I mean something else. My opinion, with emphasis on "my", is that it tries to follow the current trend of flatness, which is not nice for my eyes. I didn't enjoy Windows 8 appearance, although I don't care for the regular issues invoked by some, as removing of the start menu. I think there is a serious segment of users who chose KDE for its differences to the other DEs, rather that for being free (as in "costs nothing"...). KDE, Gnome and other DEs should be closer to their user spirit than MacOS or Windows resemblance.

Once again, it is the plasma 5 desktop developed by the KDE community.

So this topic is about the plasma desktop.

There is no "KDE 5".

You heard it here first folks, joost hates KDE 5!

But yes, I'm aware that they are being split up (I read about it here: https://dot.kde.org/2013/09/04/kde-rele ... re-evolves )

Regardless, my point stands. KDE plasma as is today isn't meant for normal user consumption, and it probably won't be until at least the first release of KDE 5 applications, or whatever they are calling it.
